32 Cheap Little Kitchen Products That'll Completely Transform The Way You Cook

Nothing on this list costs more than 25 bucks, but the amount of time, effort, and cleanup they'll save you is priceless.

    1. A time-saving Oxo Tot Grape Cutter, because even if you don't have kids you're prepping snacks for, manually slicing cherry tomatoes and olives for your salads is just the most tedious thing in the world. This handy thing quarters a bunch at once so you can use your extra time for mixing up a quick vinaigrette!

Promising review: "Couldn’t imagine that this would be any faster than slicing tomatoes with a knife. I was sooo wrong. I can do a pint of tomatoes in like a minute. It’s amazing. One of the few single-use gadgets that I'm truly obsessed with. I love this thing." —Kanne

Get it from Amazon for $11.71.

    2. Plus a mini yet mighty hand-powered food chopper in case the thought of slicing and dicing a million vegetables is enough to make you swear off of cooking altogether. With this, just pull the string and it'll whiz everything into little pieces in a jiffy. Best of all? No more onion tears!

It's also dishwasher-safe (top rack only!) so cleanup is easy peasy.

Promising review: "Whoever invented this is a genius. It comes put together and ready to use. It’s great — good size. It doesn’t seem like it could be as powerful and efficient as it is, but it’s great! It only takes a few times, and there you have it. It’s functional and wonderful! I despise cutting onions and this will make my life so much easier! I’m fascinated by my purchase!" —Timu

    3. And speaking of alliums, an *essential* pair of onion goggles, because if you've ever found yourself sobbing through a mountain of onions while preparing dinner, you're gonna be so grateful you made the investment. Sure, they might look a little funny, but they'll keep the tear-causing fumes from reaching your eyes!

As you can see from the ~extremely~ stylish photo above, I own these very goggles! Ok, maybe they're not the coolest-looking accessories in the world, but NONETHELESS (!) they are an absolute lifesaver if you suffer from painful eye stinging and tearing while slicing those alliums. I used to avoid recipes that called for any onion that wasn't a scallion because I hated preparing onions with all my might, but once these entered my life, I found myself chopping away with ease. The key is to make sure the goggles create a really tight seal around your eyes — I have a smaller head, so I sometimes have to really push them on to make sure they're airtight, but once I figured this out, it was a total game changer. Will you feel super silly while you have 'em on? Yes! Will you care after you see your finished pile of onions that were chopped without shedding a single tear? No! And if I'm willing to plaster myself wearing them all over BuzzFeed, you can definitely wear them in the privacy of your own kitchen. I highly recommend them to anyone who also suffers from onion tears!

Promising review: "I am about as sensitive to onion enzymes as a person can possibly be, and I have tried everything. A friend got these and posted a picture of herself with them and I had to look them up. They're definitely not as cheap as some swimming goggles but MAN are they worth it! These goggles are more like safety glasses, so they are easier to take on and off and are much more comfortable than actual goggles. I wasn't sure the soft foam around the inside would actually keep the onion enzymes out, since my face and head are decidedly on the small side, but it did! And lastly, they were crystal clear the whole time so I could take my time cutting my onions perfectly, rather than the hacking they usually get as I try to be done as quickly as possible." —Liz Lare

Get them from Amazon for $17.78+ (available in five colors).

    4. A game-changing Snap N' Strain, which will make pouring out excess liquids a heck of a lot less anxiety-inducing. Since it clips right onto your bowl or cooking vessel, you won't be holding a hot, heavy pot of pasta with one hand and steadying an unnecessary colander with the other. Plus, emptying your hot food into another container is a surefire way of rapidly cooling it down — not exactly the goal most of the time!

gif of reviewer draining water out of a bowl of pasta using the gray snap n' strain
reviewer photo of the green snap n' strain clipped onto a pot of pasta with the water being drained out

It also has a spout so you can control how much liquid you pour out, and its compact design won't take up much storage space!

Promising review: "Typically, I am not a fan of one-trick kitchen utensils. But this thing is a game changer!! Regular strainers are clunky and take up too much space, plus pouring scalding hot liquid into them with heavy food splashing around is dangerous and messy. This eliminates that. Seriously, how have I lived my life without this? I remember making a very large and heavy batch of soup stock and it was difficult enough to just lift the pot and pour, let alone safely into a strainer that could easily move or tip over if I poured too quickly…but this baby made the transfer so easy it’s almost laughable that anyone would use a normal strainer these days! It’s sturdy, it stays in place, it's small, lightweight, won’t rust, easy to clean, doesn’t burn your hands after being submersed in liquid fire. What else could you ask for in a strainer? Enough already, just buy it!" —Kellu

    5. A delightful singing egg timer so you can stop pacing your kitchen wondering if your eggs are at the perfect jammy stage yet. Just place it into the water with your eggs, turn the heat on, go do something else within hearing distance, and depending on the song it plays, you'll know if your eggs are soft-, medium-, or hard-boiled!

Brainstream is a small biz that was started by German engineer and inventor Dr. Rupprecht Gabriel, who was ~fed up~ with eating improperly cooked eggs in the morning!

Promising review: "I bought one of these several years ago and have enjoyed it so much I purchased more for friends and family. It's very accurate. You just put it in the water with the eggs and it plays three tunes, one for soft-boiled, one for medium, and one for hard-boiled. Each tune plays three times. For instance, if you want hard-boiled eggs, you listen for 'Hail Hail the Gang's All Here' to play for the third time, and the eggs will be perfectly hard-boiled. It's the most accurate egg timer I've ever had." —LM

    6. And a set of silicone egg poaching cups in case your "swirl the pot of water with some vinegar, drop your eggs in, and hope for the best" method hasn't really been working out for ya. These cute little things will keep your yolks from breaking as they cook, and don't require precariously fishing your eggs out with a slotted spoon!

    A reviewer's delicious-looking poached egg with a runny center
The cups holding a raw egg while sitting in a pot of water

You can also use them in the microwave! You'll wanna spray the cups with cooking spray so the eggs can slide right out when they're done, and if you choose the stovetop method, it's helpful to use a transparent lid on your pot so you can see for yourself when they're cooked to your liking!

Promising review: "I think this is the ultimate way to poach an egg. I have tried egg rings but the eggs just keep leaking out, so that was a fail. The metal poacher is a headache to clean and always comes with four slots. What if I want to cook just one egg? Still have to use the whole thing to just cook one, and that really is not a simple way. The silicone egg poacher is simple, it’s fast, and silicone is safer than metal and plastic. The ring stander makes it steady for microwave cooking and in boiling water, too. Just love them." —Happy cat

    7. handheld knife sharpener to keep your most-used kitchen tool impeccably pointy. Not only will this help you chop faster, it'll also make the process safer since you won't be exerting as much effort slicing through those slippery tomatoes.

Swipe dull knives through the coarse side and sharp ones through the fine end to touch-up and polish.

I use this for my knives, and whenever I hear the 'zing!' of the blade going through I feel *so* legit. My knives are several years old, but giving them a quick once-over with this handy gadget makes them work like new every time.

Promising review: "This made it so simple to sharpen my knives and it has been life-changing. Not sure why I felt this was so hard or complicated before. This is an awesome little product. Stores away nicely, sharpens with only a couple of turns. Huge value for the money!" —RTRae

    8. A compact prep-and-pour cutting board that seems so simple, you'll wonder why you didn't come up with its brilliant design first. Rather than awkwardly holding a flat cutting board over your salad bowl and hoping everything makes its way in, or — even worse! — making multiple trips back and forth with the chopped pieces balancing on the blade of your knife, simply fold this bad boy up and you'll have perfect aim.

Promising review: "Love these! I got several as gifts, and when I brought them home, my boyfriend looked them over and pouted because I hadn't gotten him one. They're very handy, allowing you to chop easily and then pour your fruit and veggies pieces into whatever container you desire without spilling." —Anne P.

Another promising review: "I purchased this for my grandma, and she really likes it. She has arthritis in her hands, so the way that the handle is raised helps her pick it up. She also loves the way it folds so she can dump everything in, and the green color helps her find it in the kitchen." —Joyce Cotton

    9. Microplane for zesting citrus, because while box graters are ~grate~ when you're shredding potatoes and carrots, a handheld tool gives you much more control so you can keep any pith (the bitter white stuff) from getting into your food. It's a lot easier on your knuckles, too!

reviewer photo of the microplane next to a tablespoon full of orange zest and a zested orange
reviewer photo of a microplane over a plate of lemon zest, with a bunch of zested lemons above it

When I worked as a baker, I often had to zest dozens of lemons at a time to make large batches of lemon cake, so I know a thing or two about the most efficient (and comfortable!) tools to use. Without a doubt, a Microplane is the best thing for the job, as it's designed to be held in your hand, meaning you can zest right over your bowl rather than having to bust out a cutting board. I found that when using a box grater, my knuckles were much more prone to nicks and cuts due to the extra effort I had to put in, not to mention the awkward angle I was holding my hand at.

Microplanes are also a great investment because they stay sharp for a really long time, and in my experience they're more precise than box graters when it comes to removing the zest without bringing the bitter pith along with it. I even bought one for my dad as a gift a few years ago, and he told me that zesting is now his favorite kitchen task!

Get it from Amazon for $15.50 (also available in a pack of two).

    10. An instant-read thermometer that'll prevent you from overcooking (and having to throw out) the pricey steak you splurged on at the butcher shop...again. Temperature is by far the most accurate indicator of doneness (despite what proponents of the wildly imprecise "finger test" might say), and this gizmo will display the temperature in just 3–5 seconds!

reviewer photo of the red thermometer reading the temperature of a pot filled with boiling sugar
Reviewer using the thermometer to read the temperature of a pie

I sincerely hope you'll never have to suffer through a burnt steak ever again (the same goes for anything that's too raw as well), and using an instant-read thermometer is the best way to monitor the cooking process along the way and ensure your food is at its safest — and most delicious — temperature. This one might not be quite as durable as the pricier options on the market, but it's much more affordable and will cover any basic cooking needs — just don't leave it in the oven, like one reviewer did!

Promising review: "Everyone who I've grilled for always asks me how my steaks and chicken are cooked to perfection. I used to do the finger trick (touch your fingers to your thumb and check your palm by the thumb), and it's hit or miss. I've tried timing, making sure the grill is on the same temp, but I've gotten mixed results. This takes the guesswork out of seeing if the meat is done. It's very common to overcook your chicken because no one wants medium rare chicken, so it's always better to be safe than sorry and leave it on the grill. But that usually means leaving the bird on a little too long and overcooking it. Every time I have used this thermometer, I take the chicken off when it reaches between 160–165, and the chicken never dries out. Taking it off the heat, the meat usually continues to cook for a couple of minutes (known as carry over cooking). Steaks come out perfect. This little gadget has saved me time and money. Stop reading the comments and order yours today!" —Big Cheezie

Get it from Amazon for $13.99+ (available in three colors).

    11. A patience-saving pair of herb scissors, because why should you painstakingly mince all of those teeny-tiny parsley leaves when this nifty gadget can do it for you? These scissors have five blades, so chop chop!

reviewer holding the green pair of scissors over a container of finely chopped herbs
reviewer using the scissors to cut up herbs over a salad bowl

It also comes with a comb to clean the leaves out from between the blades!

Promising review: "I like to grow herbs and use them in salads, soups, and many other recipes. I received these herb scissors as a birthday gift, and can't believe how fast and easy it is to cut up cilantro, basil, parsley, lovage, etc. My husband tried them today too for the first time while making guacamole, and found that slicing the cilantro went very quickly. The storage case-cleaner is very efficiently designed, too. I ordered four of these sets to give as gifts." —Lucille P. Nawara

Get them from Amazon for $17.09 (available in black or green).

    12. And a handy herb leaf remover that separates the leaves from the stem in one fell swoop. No more wasting time picking each leaf off individually, and no more unpleasant stems sneaking their way into your roasted vegetables!

    13. An easy-grip Oxo cookie scoop you should own even if you're not a baker, since it'll ensure your meatballs (and any other small, spherical foods!) are consistent in size. Those mushy mixtures can be really difficult (and messy) to shape by hand, and not only does scooping make them look more uniform, it'll help them finish cooking at the same time, too!

You can also use them to evenly portion cupcake batter. I personally use my scoop every time I make matzo ball soup, and recently used it to make the vegetarian "meat" balls shown above. The mixture 100% would have crumbled apart had I not had the scoop to pack it into!

Promising review: "I've had this product for over four years and thought I should review it because it's awesome. I use this cookie scoop at least once a week, whether it's baking, meatballs, portioning stuff to freeze — you name it. I like that it's sturdy and the spring is still holding perfectly, but it doesn't hurt my hand to use. Well worth the price for long-lasting quality." —Verdecitos

Another promising review: "One of the things that I dislike about making foods like meatballs, drop cookies, and dumplings is the difficulty of getting them all roughly the same size by hand. Weighing each gets annoying, and I don't make any one recipe often enough to just have an instinctive feel. Scoops to the rescue! I am MUCH more tempted to make drop cookies, etc. now that I have this! I'll add that they would have been ideal when I was regularly making raw food for our cats — it would have made freezing the stuff in single-serving 'meatballs' so much easier! If you want or need to portion food, these are great." —Cissa

Get it from Amazon for $16.95+ (available in three sizes, a variety pack, and several bundle sets).

    14. A stainless-steel dumpling and empanada press for achieving expertly clean crimps without any intricate handiwork or super-involved folding on your part. It's also great for making ravioli and even mini hand pies!

Promising review: "Quick and easy dumplings. I used this to make Peking dumplings. My girlfriend summed it up best when she called the result 'perfect.' Very simple to use!" —Karen C

Another promising review: "Great size and so easy to use. Made pierogi and they came out great. Just use the open circle to punch out the dough, then put the dough circle on top, add filling, and fold! I found it worked best when you stretch the dough circle just a little to make sure the edges line up, and my recipe suggested wetting the edges slightly to help make a better seal. Also you don't need quite as much filling as you might think. I popped it in the dishwasher (top rack) when I was done and it escaped clean and unharmed. For the price it was well worth it. Don't want to imagine how messy everything would have looked if I had tried with just my hands." —Emily

    15. A kitchen measurement conversion magnet you can stick on your fridge as an easy reference when you must know how many tablespoons are in 1/3 cup, like, right now. No more clumsily looking it up on your phone with grease-coated hands!

Promising review: "A garlic press??? Do you need a garlic press? The answer is YES, YES, YES!! This is a great garlic press combo set. It is made of very good, strong aluminum construction. It feels good in the hand, nice weight, and very easy to use. I have used it four or five times. It is designed with two holes, one that crushes the garlic, the second to slice the garlic. Both holes work great. The handle is nice and sturdy, easy to use. The durability factor is great. It comes with a little brush and a little cleaning tool to assist with cleaning. It makes cleaning fast and easy. It does a great job with any garlic that is stuck in the press. It does well in the dishwasher, too. I love the silicone peeler tube. I can’t believe I have never used a tool to assist with peeling. I guess it is better late than never!! This is a great press, of great quality, at a great price. It works great! This garlic press has saved me so much time in prep, making cooking a little easier. I will get one for my sister. She would love this, I know I do!! Great buy!" —Dee's World

If you watch cooking shows, you've probably seen them being used to scoop up deep-fried foods from piping hot oil, noodles that are finished boiling, and pretty much anything else that should be lifted quickly to keep from overcooking. Using tongs to remove two fries at a time is *not* doing you any favors!

Promising review: "This is a well-made spider strainer. Strong handle, sturdy basket. Many others in this price range are disappointing. Very pleased with the quality. Perfect size for pasta, veggies, dumplings, and even for frying chicken pieces. It’s important to me that my strainers are dishwasher safe, so no wood handles. This has been a workhorse. I recommend without reservation." —docjavadude

    20. A sturdy bench scraper, which will basically become an extension of your arm when you're making bread or pasta from scratch. It can slide right under a ball of dough after it's been kneaded (much cleaner than using your fingers!), and it'll also come in handy when you're portioning the dough into smaller pieces. Plus, cleanup will be way easier if you have one of these for gathering excess flour and residue from the counter.

reviewer using the bench scraper to cut sheets of pasta dough
Reviewer photo of the bench scraper on a wooden cutting board

When I was baking professionally, my bench scraper was the thing I reached for most often after my scale! I also use it at home whenever I have to cut sticks of butter into cubes — its straight, wide blade makes it much easier than using a knife. This one has a helpful ruler on it, and if you like to bake, it's what all the pros use to smooth out the frosting on their cakes!

Promising review: "Recently I've been getting into baking bread (inflation was a big factor), and as a result, I've found myself carving out time in the week to bake a couple of loaves. I had seen others on YouTube videos (tutorials) that had used it, I thought it was more of a flex kinda thing. So I paid no mind...initially. Until I realized how much time I spent in between getting my dough ready. And because I was making enriched bread (challah/brioche/milk bread) there was quite a bit of cleanup time in between pre-shaping. It was at that point, I decided lemme give it a try and 'just see.' Well...It is a TIME SAVER. I've been able to speed up my process exponentially, as I'm able to simply give a handful of swipes to my flour board and return to the next step. It is isn't something that I initially thought I'd use or be interested in; however, after using it for months...the idea of NOT having one available while pre-shaping just makes me shake my head. And the added bonus is its appearance. Well worth it if you're on the fence of getting one." —Will

    21. And an unassuming bowl scraper that looks like a simple piece of plastic but will effortlessly pry your tacky bread dough from the bottom of the mixing bowl. Promising review: "My husband and I have started to make our own bread and needed something to pull the dough out of the bowl and onto the floured countertop. This is the perfect size to do that. It fits my hand really well. I spilled some cake flour this morning on the countertop while making a cake. I reached for this scraper first before trying to use my hands to scoop the cake flour up and the scraper succeeded where my hands would have left some of it there. They are made to reach into a bowl or use on a countertop for crumbs or sticky bread flour or anything else you'd like to pick up. I looked at these for a long time before buying and now I wonder why I waited so long. They're perfect." —Natures Scape

It's also BPA free, and while it's *technically* dishwasher safe, some reviewers say they suggest hand-washing to keep the measurements from fading over time.

Promising review: "I love this measuring cup so much I want to marry it. I cook and bake a lot, and my eyes are getting old and they don't want to see those little marks on measuring tools, and my hands shake so it is barely possible to hold up a cup and squint to see the measurements. I can see these bold red numbers very well, and I can leave the cup on the cabinet while I measure. I feel like it changed my life in a small way. Nothing bad to say about this little beauty." —nesmith52

It's made of BPA-free food grade material, has both US and metric measurements, and is dishwasher- and microwave-safe!

Kitchen Cube was founded in Minneapolis by a group of entrepreneurs who were tired of having a bunch of measuring tools cluttering up and getting lost in their drawers!

Promising review: "First of all I gotta say, I don’t cook much, and if there’s something I hate after cooking it's having to wash a bunch of utensils once I use them. This cube has been amazing; I don’t have to wash a million utensils over and over, it’s very easy to use, easy to clean, and it’s very handy to use when I’m meal prepping for the week. I bought this out of curiosity and ended up enjoying it a lot. If a regular guy like me is enjoying it, I’m sure it would be a great tool for people who cook or bake on a regular basis." —Daniel Matajira

Promising review: "I absolutely cannot believe I'm doing this. I got this because I am ALWAYS having to pick out the shell when I crack an egg, whether for breakfast or my baking. Since buying this, I have cracked dozens of eggs without ANY shells in it. To say I am happy is an understatement. If you don't have one you should rush to get one. We are going to get them for wedding gifts when we know that the couple loves to do their own cooking. Kudos to whoever thought of this. It works perfectly, every time." —Edwin Myers

It comes with a smaller compartment to fit limes and a larger one for lemons.

BuzzFeed Shopping's Heather Braga says: "My mom got one of these and continues to rave about it to me each time she uses it. I wasn't sure what all the hype was about until I watched how easily she was able to squeeze a slew of lemons for a recipe she was working on. Easy peasy lemon squeezy."

Promising review: "I was surprised at the heft of this juicer. It is a heavy duty metal utensil. My only regret is that I have been squeezing lemons using a reamer for all these years when I could have been using this wonderful lemon/lime squeezer. It made juicing lemons fast and efficient. I couldn't believe how much more juice came out of a lemon when I used this squeezer. And don't even get me started on trying to squeeze enough key limes to have juice for a pie. Before this squeezer, I spent about 10 times longer and wasted so much elbow grease on those tiny limes! Those little limes were actually the reason I looked for something that would be more efficient — and this squeezer does the job beautifully." —A. Goodman

    29. An adjustable tofu press, which squeezes the excess water out of your tofu in as little as 10 minutes to get it nice and firm. Just throw that block of soy in here, set the press to your desired thickness, and let it sit while you get the rest of your prep done. No need to construct a makeshift press out of heavy books and plates anymore!

If you decide to let it sit longer, you don't have to keep pressing down on it!

Promising review: "Fantastic! This beats using dish towels and a weight 100x over. The press evenly distributes weight on the tofu and the water drips from little holes across the entire bottom. I cranked out all the water I could and ended up with a nice, dense block that was easy to cut and didn't bulge out at the sides like it would when I used other methods. I used the container to marinate it, too, and couldn't be happier!" —Amazon Customer

Promising review: "I didn't have high expectations for this corn cob peeler, but saw the good reviews so thought I would give it a chance. I am amazed. I can peel an ear of corn in seconds. As a child, I remember how my mom would peel off the corn and freeze it for year round corn. She would work her fingers to the bone. How great this would be for people who can or freeze corn. I noticed the blade is razor sharp, so I am being very careful with cleaning and storage. Highly recommended!" —Flossygirl

Promising review: "We LOVE this little gadget. Now that we have it, we wonder how we ever got along without it. Seriously! This makes tenderizing meats so easy, fast and CLEAN. Simply pressing the blades down into the meat is much cleaner than using a tenderizer mallet, which splatters meat and juice all over the place. Cleaning the tool itself is a breeze, too." —tuBgrateful
