I get the self-love argument.Ithink the author misses one point though. Kanye’s ‘success’ takes place inacapitalistic context. Conflating capitalistic success with ‘liberation,’ ‘creativity,’ ‘populism’ and so on is not onlyadubious proposition, due to its inherently hierarchical and ego-centric nature, but also fairly reeks of recuperation. It’s disheartening to me to see people consciously define themselves in relation to the products of the hierarchical culture, it only serves to recuperate their dissidence and their limnal experience (which is so valuable BECAUSE of its limnality, as it exists on the edge, and sometimes outside of this inequitable culture) back into the dominant culture… only to be made and sold off as so many consumer products. Meaningless copies of the original.
