The Best References In Orange Is The New Black

Orange Is The New Black has been nominated for a whopping TWELVE Emmys. Here are the best pop-culture references from the first two seasons. CONTAINS SPOILERS.

1) American Pie

It's also the second time Deborah Rush plays Jason Biggs' Mother in Law, as she played Michelle's Mum, Mary Flaherty, in American Wedding too.

2) The Shawshank Redemption

There are many theories to why Red, real name Galina Reznikov, is nicknamed Red. Her hair colour and her nationality (Russian) are the most obvious. Often overlooked is her likeness to Red in the Shawshank Redemption (played by Morgan Freeman). They are both compassionate, older inmates and are the ones that can "get things in."

This isn't the only Shawshank reference. In Episode 4 of Season One, Miss Claudette directly quotes Shawshank Red.

3) Ferris Bueller Fight Club Theory

Soso's Ferris Bueller Fight Club Theory has been around a while. Still it's nice to see her explaining it to Sophia. Maybe, none of the inmates exist and Piper's been in SHU the whole time (probably not though).

4) Books

5) Piper Kerman

The opening credits, set to Regina Spektor's You've Got Time features only real life ex-cons. Including, Piper Kerman, the real life Piper Chapman and author of the memoir the series is based on.

6) Star Trek

Kate Mulgrew (Red), also played Captain Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek, but never knew Spock.

7) Disney, so much disney.

Bugs Bunny, Cinderella, Cruella de Vil, Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, Hannah Montana, Peter Pan, Ratatouille, Toy Story to name a few, OITNB is full of Disney references.

It's gone so far, someone's even made a mash-up of Disney and Orange, Frozen Is The New Black
