Is ESPN A Hypocrite For Breaking The Rutgers Basketball Scandal?

ESPN did good this week. Its investigative report gave Rutgers University impetus to fire an abusive coach. But the World Wide Leader should take a long, hard look in the mirror before patting itself on the back.

On Tuesday, ESPN's "Outside the Lines" aired video of Rutgers Basketball Coach Mike Rice abusing his players in practice.

He was seen grabbing, shoving and pegging his team, in addition to berating them with homophobic epithets.

Before the tape went public, Rutgers AD Tim Pernetti issued a mere three-game suspension against Rice. He defended that leniency on "Outside the Lines."

But the media machine was already in motion, and one day later, Mike Rice was out of a job.

Without ESPN's investigation, there's a good chance Rice would have gotten a simple slap on the wrist. Great job, guys!

    Actually, on second thought...

This is legendary basketball coach Bob Knight.

He's That Guy Ron Swanson Loves

    ...a lot.

He's also a college basketball analyst at ESPN.

In 1997, Knight was the subject of his own practice-video scandal after he was caught choking player Neil Reed.

Five years earlier, Knight was caught playfully rearing a black player with a bullwhip.

And one year prior THAT, he told players they would pay for a loss "like [they] cannot f**king believe."

In September of 2000, Knight was fired for violently grabbing and berating freshman Kent Harvey.

Having said all that, the following bears repeating: Knight is an active employee at ESPN.

And though the network has tried hard to dance around the issue...

ESPN cannot properly celebrate its achievement while Knight is still on the payroll.
