Arrogant, reckless and strident, the only thing bigger than Duchess's ego is his Oedipal Complex. Being really (really, really) funny can only forgive so many abuses. And for the love of God, Sterling: If poaching eggs is so damn easy, why don't you do it yourself next time?

8. Sherlock Holmes, "Sherlock"

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sherlock is technically "on the side of the angels." But anyone so willing to wound Molly Hooper is no true hero of mine.

7. Philip Jennings, "The Americans"

Wipe that smirk off your face, Mr. Jennings (if that is your real name) (which it isn't). You can flip-flop all you want, but as of today, you and your brittle life partner are still plotting to destroy my country.

Of all the guys on this list, it's Jax – President of a motor-bike-ridin', hard-drug-dealin', no-prisoners-takin' motorcycle gang – whose role of protagonist, in a vacuum, would have turned the most heads 20 years ago. And to be perfectly honest, it's not even close.

The good: Nucky gives the people what they want – namely, booze. The bad: Pretty much everything else he's ever done.

4. Don Draper, "Mad Men"

Take a bow, Mr. Draper. You've amassed quite the resume. You caused your Lieutenant's death in Korea; you stole your Lieutenant's dog tags on the battlefield; and you parlayed your Lieutenant's identity into a life of wealth and amour. It takes more than five seasons to counterpoise that one.

3. Dexter Morgan, "Dexter"

Doakes wasn't the most congenial Sergeant at Miami Metro Homicide, but he was an innocent man, a good cop, and a smash hit at surprise parties. Dexter wrongfully cast him as The Bay Harbor Butcher and featured heavily in his death. Plus, I mean, there's that whole "unquenchable need to stab people" thing.

2. Francis J. Underwood, "House of Cards"

In one short season, Frank has strangled a dog, chastised a hobo, and murdered a fellow member of Congress. And unlike others on this list, save a few classic bits of fourth-wall-breaking wisdom, he doesn't offset that with many redeemable qualities – if any at all. But in the cynical underbelly of D.C. politics, who the hell else are we supposed to root for?

Walt didn't just poison an innocent six-year-old boy; Walt poisoned an innocent six-year-old boy as part of his master plan to kill the guy who made him a millionaire. And, if you're benumbed enough to keep watching, it turns out that was just the tip of his megalomania.
