11 Moments From Sunday's ‘The Leftovers’ That Are Definitely NOT Metaphors

Talk about on the nose. Am I right?

**SPOILER ALERT THROUGH EPISODE 109 OF THE LEFTOVERS**

HBO’s ‘The Leftovers’ has never once featured any plot point or story device that was steeped in any kind of subtext or coded meaning. Not once. Here is a recap of last night’s episode that features the more notable non-metaphors:

    1. This mug that says “My Hero”, which starts leaking coffee during Kevin’s father’s speech to the police force, is definitely not a metaphor. The fact that his father is later committed and becomes a nuisance to society has nothing to do with this

    2. This moment when Laurie, who later joins a cult and leaves her family, discusses a litter of puppies that has outgrown the need for their mother absolutely cannot be interpreted to have any other meaning so just give it a rest

    3. This discussion about an errant deer that’s ravaging the town just being confused and trapped is not related to any emotional journey of any of the characters. No way, not possible

    4. This rumbling manhole cover that erupts and nearly engulfs Kevin in flames hours before “the vanishing” could not be any less related to any other part of the story

    5. This reiteration of the deer being trapped immediately after Kevin and Laurie’s discussion about their rocky marital status is just about some animal and nothing else. Case closed

    6. This

    7. Kevin shooting the deer while seeing a reflection of himself in the animal’s glistening eye should be taken at face value, certainly

    8. This bloody "It's a Girl!" balloon caught in the deer's antlers means nothing. I don't care what his wife happens to be doing simultaneously at the OBGYN. You're just splitting hairs now

    9. This conversation about the deer appearing suddenly and being out of place just reeks of not being a metaphor

    10. The moment at the science fair when Jill, Tommy, and some students form a circuit and turn a light on by linking arms is really on the nose. When one of the students disappears and the light goes out — talk about zero amounts of symbolism

    11. But Justin Theroux’s bulge MIGHT be a metaphor
