Why I'd Make A Great Candidate For Your Company

Hi, I'm Becky, a twentysomething creative soul bumbling through the abyss of graduate life, trying to land a career that showcases my skills, passion and personality to the world (or failing that, offers free food and endless cups of tea). However, since I've forwarded you this article you should know that I think your company is something special and I'd really love the opportunity to work with you.

I graduated with a 2:1 degree in BA English Literature with English Language and Communication from the University of Hertfordshire in 2015.

Like the majority of fresh and optimistic graduates, I set out bright-eyed and bushy-tailed eager to pursue my dream of a career in the media sector. Albeit hopeful, the 'dream' that faced me, however, was a black hole of unemployment, and I consequently spent most of my free time fabricating time-consuming applications to potential employers, only to hear nothing back.

Meanwhile, as a pit-stop to pursuing my dream career, I undertook a temporary position as a Production Operative to gain some experience.

I was working long hours doing menial work for minimum wage and far from living the graduate dream. However, I am a strong believer that experience builds character, and hard work and persistence always pay off in the end. Besides, even Beyonce once swept up hair for a living!

My current role is primarily computer-based, working as an administrative assistant at the Student Loans Company.

Essentially, I spend my week processing applications for financial aid from the future generation of architects, lawyers, scientists and medics, so that they too can become engulfed in £30k+ of crippling debt like myself. Oh the irony!

This means that I'm computer-savvy and confident accessing a variety of technological platforms.

I can confidently use Microsoft Office (all the usual suspects), OpenOffice, GoogleDocs, the Internet, E-Mail, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and internal computer systems, and regularly use smartphones and tablets in my day-to-day life for not only browsing the internet and streaming music and videos, but also for satisfying my unquenchable addiction to social media.

Alongside my Major of English Literature, and my minor of English Language and Communication, I also undertook several Creative Writing modules at University.

I am a confident written communicator with creative flair, an inexorable passion for both reading and writing and a curious and inquisitive mind. From creating persuasive content to imaginative short stories for children, I have experience of adapting my written style to create inventive content for various audiences, and find that written communication is often where my personality and creativity best shines through.

Moreover, I am a self-confessed Grammar Nazi and word-smith with a hawk-eye ability to spot grammatical and spelling errors.

I'm bemused and frustrated at the illiteracy of our generation. The incorrect utilisation of 'they're', 'their' and 'there' is beyond exasperating. What's more, I have an integral need to employ perfect grammar and spelling myself.

If a Tweet cannot be posted within the 140 character limit with correct grammar and punctuation, then that Tweet will simply not grace its potential audience.

Although I don't have any industry-based experience in a professional sense, I'm addicted to Social Media and passionate about sharing engaging content with the world.

Whether it be through Tweeting the right content, selecting the most flattering Instagram filter or letting the world know 'What's on [my] mind?', it's hard to deny that social media accounts have become an integral part of life.

From ordering a pizza at the click of an emoji (can you tell I've been reading your blog?!) to discretely stalking your ex at 3am (come on, we all do it!), social media allows you to do it all.

I'd describe myself as being an irrevocably curious person.

I grew up as a fairly introverted individual, but as a result of this, I've always been insatiably perceptive and curious of my surroundings and I have an inexorable desire to know about what's happening in the world. I'm naturally analytical and a strong listener, and am capable of strong levels of concentration, so it's understandable that I'm constantly glued to my phone and laptop and addicted to reading about the latest trends and news stories as they go viral.

I'm always willing to go above and beyond for the company I work for, even if it means sacrificing irrelevant things like my sanity along the way.

At my last position, I was working up to 70 hours a week in order to hit deadlines during the busy Christmas period, and didn't have a single day off for almost six weeks. In my current role, I often volunteer for overtime on weekends to offer assistance during busy periods.

Therefore, I have a strong work ethic and always adopt a positive can-do attitude to tasks.

I'm a friendly, optimistic individual who always has a smile on my face; I'm willing to attempt any task given to me and always try to complete tasks to the best of my ability.

As a literature graduate, I have great analytical and strategical skills.

Although analysing and contextualising Shakespearean prose may be my forte, my analytical and interpretive skills are widely transferable to every day life
I have the ability to source information and interpret it from opposing points of view, and can analyze information in detail. Similarly, these skills, alongside my strategical competence, allow me to not only perceive and interpret problems, but also to reach rational and cautious decisions.

I'm a fun, friendly and cheerful individual.

Although I may come across as a little quiet at first, I soon grow in confidence once I settle in to an environment, and my friendly and bubbly personality becomes apparent. I'm passionate about living life to its full potential, and can rarely be found without a smile or giggle on my face.

But I'm also highly organised and can effectively manage my time.

All of my previous roles have been very fast-paced and deadline-orientated, and I'm used to working to time constraints and under pressure. I consistently exceed both my productivity and accuracy targets in my current data-entry position and regularly get chosen to train my colleagues in order to increase their performance. As a result, I'm highly organised (I use checklists and schedules to organise myself), and and have learnt to manage conflicting priorities well.

I can think outside of the box...

I enjoy my current role, I work with amazing people and I consistently exceed my targets, but at the end of the day I'm searching for a role in an industry that excites me and offers scope for a long-term career, not just another job to add to the CV.
