10 Helpful Tips: Surviving San Diego's Comic Con

San Diego's Comic Con can be a daunting experience. With attendees in the hundreds of thousands it pays to have a game plan. Here are some helpful tips!

    1. Be the Early Worm

If you're a stickler for time, and/or demand being one of the first to step foot on the show floor then arrive early! Getting downtown before the 9 a.m. curtain call not only ensures you're part of the elite, but ready to go when the bell tolls.

    2. Ride the Rails

Avoid the parking fiasco, let someone else drive! The train is a great alternative to dealing with road rage. The Coaster has a flexible schedule, a $12.00 all-encompassing daily pass good on all transits, and the ability to drink/eat while on board. It'll take a little longer, sure, but the payoff is that you'll arrive safe and sound.

    3. Grab a Map

Once you get down to the convention center don't be afraid of being a tourist. Flip to the middle of the information booklet—find one near the many entrances, or where you get your pass—and locate the map. The map details the entire show floor, including the location of all the vendors. You'll notice the floor is split into categories, too. Comics and collectibles in the southern region, videogames in the east, and commercial retailers in the center, for example.

    4. Hydrate

Sounds silly, but it's true. Chances are you'll be so excited once you enter the show floor you'll forget all about your bodies demands. With all the running around, heavy breathing, and constant simulation be sure to stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle, or make a conscious effort to drink from a fountain every now and then.

    5. Eat Smart

It's a good idea to plan ahead for lunch. The convention center offers a few choices, though if you have any dietary restrictions or simply want to avoid junk food you're better off going on an adventure. Besides, you'll most likely want to take a break from the show floor anyway. There are markets within walking distance, as well as quick and easy salad/sandwich shops. A quick Yelp search will yield a variety of results.

    6. Get Me Out of Here!

The convention center is big. Like, really big. Don't forget there's an entire second floor, too. While the areas upstairs mainly cater towards the panel rooms, you'll be happy to know there are cafes, more vendors, and most importantly the opportunity to step outside and face an ocean breeze. Escape through the doors upstairs (don't worry, you can get back in) and you'll be treated to an elevated view of Coronado, including the bridge.

    7. Help Eliminate the Wait

Given the nature of the Con, and how many people attend, you can bet your butt there'll be lines. If you're waiting to see a particularly 'hot' panel you can expect to wait in line for hours. In order to combat the boredom you might want to consider bringing a book, a handheld gaming device, or friends. It'll certainly help pass the time.

    8. Avoid the Aches

Expect to walk. A lot—it's the only way to get around. You'll thank yourself over and over again by selecting the right shoes. Ladies, no heels. Unless it's detrimental to your costume forgo the glam in lieu of something sporty and comfortable.

    9. Strike a Pose

A costume is great. But bigger isn't always better. If you're planning on wearing a costume, chances are you already know what you're getting yourself. If you decide mobility isn't important, great! But be aware the show floor is packed, and simply walking around (even in normal gear) is difficult. Also, wearing a costume ensures you'll be posing for pictures. Expect to stop every two to three steps and take a picture for not one, but several people.

    10. Know Your Surroundings

Remember, the convention center isn't the only place to get your fix. With the show being as large as it is, vendors have taken it upon themselves to set up offsite—and they're all vying for your attention. Take a moment to figure out what's in the immediate area, you might be surprised. Free concerts, San Diego Padres PETCO park gets overrun by Nerd HQ (free arcade games), and even free drinks and food. Ask around.
