Australia's Oldest Man And Penguin Enthusiast Alf Date Dies Aged 110

"He was a champion and a legend and always will be".

Australia's oldest man, Alf Date, died last night at the age of 110.

The father of seven passed away at his nursing home in Umina Beach, on the New South Wales central coast, last night.

Born in 1905 in Fulham, England, Date moved to Australia in 1912. He was remembered by his grandson Stewart on Facebook.

Date was famous for more than just his age. He was also part of a group that knitted woollen jumpers for penguins after they were caught in an oil spill.

Speaking to ninemsn in February last year, Date said knitting was a "good way of getting along in life".

Ian Date's funeral will be held at the Greenway Chapel Memorial Gardens in Green Point next Tuesday.
