13 Amazing Side-By-Side Pictures Of Life At Queen's

Driving your "mustang" to school had an entirely different meaning in 1844 judging by the photo in No. 8. We dare to compare by highlighting photos that demonstrate life at Queen's.

1. The (Leonard Hall) Last Supper

In 2014, a group of students in Leonard Hall did an amazing job recreating Da Vinci’s Last Supper. It became one of the most-liked posts on the Overheard at Queen’s Facebook page. No word if they were art history students.

3. Harry Potter Room

What is amazing about these pictures is how little has changed in the Harry Potter Room in Douglas Library over the past 90 years. It looks like the desks were rotated and some lights were added. Why mess with a good thing, right?

4. Hockey Sunset

Playing hockey on a frozen Lake Ontario during a sunset has been a source of beautiful photos for years, judging by the top photo from the 1973 Tricolour Yearbook and a more recent picture by Connor Pardy, Artsci'18. Game on!

5. John Matheson, Arts’40, LLD’84

The first photo from the 1940 Tricolour yearbook shows John as a young Economics graduate. He was involved in many Alma Mater Society activities. The second photo was taken at Queen’s in 2013 a few months before he passed away at the age of 96.

The medals on his chest give a small glimpse of the incredible life he lived. John fought in the Second World War and was gravely wounded in Italy in 1943. After the war he became a lawyer and a judge, served in the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament, created the Order of Canada (Canada’s highest civilian honour), and is considered to be Father of the Canadian Flag. 6. Grant Hall

There was no ivy on Grant Hall back in 1922. Today, the trees are bigger, the telephone pole is gone and the road is paved.

7. Summerhill

Summerhill is the oldest building at Queen’s. It was built as a private home in 1839 before Queen’s bought it in 1853. In the beginning, all of Queen’s University was located in Summerhill. Over the years, the building housed the School of Medicine and was the Principal’s official residence. Today it is office space for the alumni relations department.

8. 203-205 William Street

In 1844, the Queen’s campus consisted of two homes at 203-205 William Street. Two more adjoining homes were added in 1847. The school was moved to Summerhill in 1853. Today the 203-205 William Street homes are private residences.

9. Richardson Stadium

The original Richardson Stadium was built in 1920 and located in the area that is now Tindall Field. Good news for today’s sports fans – a new, revitalized stadium is expected to be finished by the start of the 2016 football season.

10. Lorne Greene, Arts 1937, LLD’71

Lorne Greene had a No. 1 song on the U.S. charts, starred in TV shows like the original Battlestar Galatica and Bonanza, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The legendary actor got his start in broadcast at CFRC on the Queen's campus..

The top ariel photo in the late 1910s/early 1920s shows a lot of open space around the Queen’s campus. The black and white photo was taken before the construction of Douglas Library in 1923-24. Many more buildings had sprung up around campus by 1997.

12. Queen’s Observatory

The Queen’s Observatory dates back to 1855 when it was located in City Park. It was moved to the foot of University Avenue in 1909, and then to its current home on top of Ellis Hall in 1958.

When Ryan Schindeler was a baby, his parents Maragaret Lloy (Hunter), OT’84, and Trevor Schindeler, Artsci’80, MA’82, Law’84, attended Homecoming in 1994 and took his picture in front of the Queen’s University sign. Two decades later, Ryan became a Queen’s electrical engineering grad.
