Confessions Of A Cashier

If you work in retail then you will already know just how stressful and testing it can be. If you don't...I have compiled a small list for you.

I’ve been working in a supermarket for 4 years now as I pay my way through University. It’s a great job and has allowed me to run my car since I passed my test 2 years ago, pay half towards a holiday to Disneyworld with my mum and many other things. However, the general public prove to be the most irrational, disgusting, stupid, annoying, unpredictable, unbelievable, hardest humans to be around. If you are any of these people then shape up and act normal. If you have to work with these people then keep trying your hardest to not punch them in the face. Keep biting your tongue and enjoy this list with me because only we have the inside knowledge of the humanity that exists in this world.

I have been compiling a mental list over the last few years of everything that gets on my nerves and here it is.

1. When something doesn’t scan, it does NOT mean it is is free

2. When you’re clearly of age and buying alcohol, I do NOT want to see if you’re ‘just old enough’

3. When you pay for your shopping and complain about how expensive it is like I’M the one who put all of those expensive items into your trolley.

4. On a Sunday when MOST shops close at 4pm, do NOT take the biscuit and continue to shop until 4:29, when I finish at 4:30.

5. Do not then complain that a cashier isn’t available.

6. The nastier you are to me, the less I will help you (in fact, I will go out of my way to NOT help you)

7. Holes will be put through your sugar, flour and other items that will cause a beautiful mess if you are rude to me.

8. Do NOT talk on your phone for the whole duration of me scanning your shopping

9. Complaining about the shop I work in does not make a difference to my life. I still work here. They still pay my wages and there are plenty of other supermarkets to shop in.

10. Allowing your annoying kids to be annoying is not ‘cute’ or ‘funny’. It’s annoying.

Lastly and most importantly:

The customer absolutely does NOT always know best. In fact, they NEVER know best.
