Photographer Explores Transgender Femininity In Mapplethorpe-Inspired Series (NSFW)

Seattle photographer Bianca Wright's series, We Are Women, takes an in-your-face approach to showing transgender women's femininity.

The series consists of black & white nude photographs featuring transgender women. The subjects are treated in a nearly traditional sense, echoing some of the great nudes of photography history. This gives the viewer a familiar entry from which they can discover each body.

"I don't use Photoshop to make my models look feminine," says Wright. "That is all done with lighting and pose. It preserves the subject's identity in the image."

With rising stars from trans backgrounds such as Laverne Cox, Carmen Carerra, and Janet Mock stepping ever more into the spotlight, calls for accurate transgender representations in art and media have risen dramatically. Work produced by transgender artists shares an inside view of trans issues and identity not often seen by those outside the community.

We Are Women attempts to shed some light on trans-feminine identity. "It's a way to been seen on a wide scale," Wright said, "a way for the general population to personally have contact with transgender women, and a way for us to show we exist."

This project is ongoing as new models volunteer through the website.
