Simply put, probiotics are healthy bacteria often found in specific foods like yogurt, or taken in pill form, that help keep your gut in balance among the millions of other cells in your belly.

Taking probiotics on a regular basis is beneficial in many ways. Most commonly, they are known for promoting a healthy intestinal and vaginal tract, supporting your immune and digestive systems and protecting your body against harmful pathogens, allergens and all the other scary stuff we come in contact with, like when traveling.

One major benefit of probiotics that sometimes is forgotten is the role they play against the side effects that come with taking antibiotics. Antibiotics are prescribed to wipe out infectious bacteria that make you sick.

However, what ends up happening is that the antibiotics annihilate everything in your gut, including the beneficial bacteria, which can result in side effects like diarrhea. Nobody has time for that!

Whether you take a probiotic regularly, or during the time you’re on antibiotics, healthy bacteria remains strong in your gut, which aids against the side effects occurring as well as other gastrointestinal conditions that can occur, according to an article by the Scientific American.
