I mean PERSONALLY if you ask ME, she's never really been gone (Whoa, Nelly! always platinum in this house 😤). But the tail end of 2023 definitely started to usher in a new little era for our favourite Portuguese-Canadian promiscuous girl. I'll recap: 👇
In 2023, Nelly finally said LET THERE BE SONGS! and gave us "Eat Your Man" with Dom Dolla and "Keep Going Up" with her OG collaborators Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. After a six year hiatus she thought... okay let me show these girls how it's done.
THEN during the Toronto stop of Drake's 2023 OVO Fest tour, Drake announced Nelly as one of his favourite artists of all time. To which I say, just one of the many things me and Drake have in common (the others being that I also live in Toronto and have a decades-long crush on Rihanna).
And who could of course forget that she ALSO took to last year's VMAs stage with Timbaland to present Taylor Swift with Song of the Year for "Anti-Hero". Note: Taylor DID in fact hug and acknowledge presenter Nelly Furtado before receiving this award. If I'm doing the math, that makes her one for two in the Acknowledging Legendary Canadian Divas Before Accepting Her Award Department 🤭🤭.
And now here we are, freshly into 2024 and Nelly is already AT IT as the recently announced host of the 53rd Juno Awards (which are kinda like the Canadian Grammys). Here's a pic of her the last time she hosted in 2007. She's dressed like a bird singing "I'm Like a Bird". Her mind! Love this girl.
We recently caught up with Nelly on the Juno announcement red carpet and guess what... there's more coming because she told us her new album is going to be "POWERFUL."
And ohhhhh I believe THAT, especially because she divulged to us that she's in her "single girl era" and in her "fun era." Which as we know are like, the eras you absolutely NEED to be in if you wanna make music for me, a gay person, who upon listening will Tweet things like "mother mother mother @nellyfurtado" over and over again until Elon takes my account away.
Nelly has had some pretty famous collabs, and while she didn't reveal who'd be popping up on her new project— she did let us know that her dream collaborations would be with none other than our fave vacanza goer Dua Lipa and...
Miss Tortured Poet herself, Taylor Swift! Both Nelly and Taylor have albums called Folklore, so I would be VERY interested to see this Folklore-off come to light one day.
