    How Basketball Helped My Shyness

A true story on getting over anxiety and becoming a better player.

Let's start out with before I started sports.I was a very timid, shy, and anxious child. So basically,I was scared of what the world threw at me.

Fast forward a few years.I'm less scared but still shy,and still pretty timid. At the time I started basketball was fourth grade, since that's when the school let kids play sports at break time.I remember how I played,I didn't get the ball much, but when I did,I always passed.I always passed because knowing fourth graders, they usually can't defend.Whoever had the ball would be triple-teamed.That overwhelmed me to where I couldn't think,so out of reflex,I looked for someone to help.Needless to say,I was always picked last.

A year later,I find myself pursuing basketball further by joining the fall league of the YMCA.I remember one of the first practices I went to.I chose to take my hat off, some may wonder why that's such a big deal.To me,it was.I used it to hide myself, and my hair.(I was conscious about my hair,I didn't like sticking out and I figured it did,as ridiculous as it seems.)My team wasn't that good, but it was fun,and I was getting better.Nothing too significant happened that season, but it was fun enough for me to join again.

The next year, which is sixth grade for me,I have gotten better.I have friends on my team from school, and one of the kids' parents were the coaches. The coaches were experienced and I knew them. This helped me out a lot.We were doing alright, and one of the kids' dads becomes the third coach. At first he seemed scary, but I got to know him,and he was a great guy.Our season improved, and it was always fun.

In the summer, our school's former basketball coach for the girls team ran a training camp with his friend for the soon to be seventh and eighth graders.I went to the camp, and we were worked hard.We were pushed to our limits and further.Yet again,I had a lot of friends to help me out.I wanted to keep up with them so I didn't let any of my timidness or shyness get in the way.

I am now in seventh grade.I have been told I am one of the best defenders on the team. The reason why I find this a big deal is that defense requires another person and the possibility of annoying them to where they lash out(I've seen it happen during my current league!).I am no longer afraid to get close to anyone who has the ball.I am not afraid of any of the players.I'm confident enough dribble and shoot.I'm able to speak for myself. All of this has paid off,it's my first year in middle school basketball, and both the girls and boys teams have made it to the championships, winning our school first and second place in both team's respective divisions.
