   The average American spends $3.16 on energy to drive daily. $3.16 may not seem like much, but spending $3.16 every day of the year adds up. To calculate this, we take the average distance traveled per day (35 miles), divided by the average distance per unit of fuel, also known as fuel economy (35 miles per gallon), and multiply by energy per unit fuel, which is 38.5 kilowatt-hours per gallon. We find that the average American consumes 38.5 kilowatt-hours per day for driving. Multiplied by the cost of energy in Washington state, ($0.082 per kilowatt-hour), we come to $3.16 per day.
