To calculate this, we take the average distance traveled per day (35 miles), divided by the average distance per unit of fuel, also known as fuel economy (35 miles per gallon), and multiply by energy per unit fuel, which is 38.5 kilowatt-hours per gallon. We find that the average American consumes 38.5 kilowatt-hours per day for driving.
