8 Things That Have Definitely Happened If You Have Lived Or Worked In York

Live in the beautiful City of York? Or even just worked in the City long enough? These things have definitely happened to you...

1. Been stuck in traffic in the city centre, but not quite for the reason you expect...

Every major city in the UK is blighted with heavy traffic, York is no exception.

However, most of the time it's not the sheer weight of traffic causing the gridlock, come Spring and early Summer the Geese and their Geese Babies take over the streets and cause chaos!

A sweet and fluffy chaos though...

Unless you have food on you, then it's a horrific and violent chaos...

2. Ended up here despite categorically ruling it out just hours earlier...

"Definitely not! No way are we going anywhere near The Willow tonight!"

Yet somehow, a few hours, a few pubs and several beers later. The Willow is the only logical choice, of course we're going! Let's face it, where else are you going to go to get your fix of cheap Tequila and sticky carpets?

3. Wondered why they bother driving empty open top buses round for 10 months of the year...

Apart from July and August when you can't move for tourists of all nationalities, the tour buses are empty, obviously apart form the driver who sails round the centre all day long without a single customer.

It's not like York is that big either. You can easily walk round the all the major bits without need of a massive double decker, unless of course you really really want to see the delights of Walmgate? Or Morrisons on Foss Islands Road maybe?

4. Been forced to walk in the road when crossing Lendal Bridge due to the hordes of tour groups blocking the pavement...

It's summer, yet they're all wearing plastic rain macs! Every single one has a camera and a set of earphones in, listening intently in to the guide telling them all about the colourful history of this wonderful place in their native language.

Can they just keep to one side a bit though? Is it really worth getting run over to get to Hartley's for a sandwich?

Yes, actually it is!

5. Been able to count the number of times you've seen no queue outside Betty's on one hand...

Wait a minute! No queue outside Betty's Tea Rooms, that can't be right, has it shut down or something?

There's always a queue of people waiting to go in. Must be outsiders though, Yorkshire folk can often think of better ways to spend twenty quid that to to splash out on a cup of tea, triangle sandwich and small piece of cake no matter how delicious it is!

6. Actually come away from York Races with more money than you went with...

7. Been asked for directions to the Minster despite it being so huge it's visible from 95% of the city...

Someone once asked me and then when I pointed it out to them, they said they thought it would be bigger. How much bigger do you want it?

8. Wondered why there aren't a few more cafes and bakeries in town...
