The Walt Disney Company has created some absolutely beautiful films since the very first feature-length animated film they ever made, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Since then they have released more than fifty other animated features. While some of them are commonly known and seen, there are others that you may not have gotten around to watching yet. Here is a list of 10 animated Disney films that you may not have seen but most certainly should.

1. The Great Mouse Detective - 1986

Disney / Via

This film was released a few years before the second Disney Golden Age that began with 1989's The Little Mermaid. This film is about a little mouse girl named Olivia whose father is abducted by the most infamous of rodent criminals, Ratigan (voiced by Vincent Price.) The only mouse who can help her get her father back is none other than Basil of Baker Street, the Sherlock Holmes of all mousedom.

2. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad - 1949

Disney / Via

Many people do not realize that the Mr. Toad's Wild Ride attraction at Disneyland is based on a film. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is a two-part movie. The first half is based on the book, The Wind and the Willows, and it is about J. Thaddeus Toad and how he gets framed for stealing a motorcar. The second part is based on the Washington Irving story of Sleepy Hollow, and it is about a schoolmaster who comes face to face with the legendary Headless Horseman.

3. Fantasia - 1940

Disney / Via

Fantasia is unlike any other Disney film because it is a series of stories set to classical music. There is no dialogue apart from the introductions spoken by the the conductor of the orchestra, Leopold Stokowski. The original Fantasia includes everything from dancing hippos to fighting dinosaurs. It also contains the very well-known depiction of Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer's Apprentice.

4. Fantasia 2000 - 1999

Disney / Via

Fantasia from 1940 was originally going to be a film that changed constantly. Every time you saw it there would be some stories from the original as well as some news ones. This didn't end up happening though until the release of Fantasia 2000. All the shorts in this film are different from the older version with the exception of The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Some of the new segments include The Steadfast Tin Soldier and Rhapsody in Blue.

5. The Fox and the Hound - 1981

Disney / Via

This is perhaps the most friendship-devoted Disney film ever made. It surrounds the unlikely friendship between Tod and Copper, a young fox and hound that have no understanding of the natural conflict that exists between their species. It is not until they are grown that they discover the challenges that friendship can bring, as well as the love that it can keep alive.

6. Make Mine Music - 1946

Disney / Via

Make Mine Music is a wonderful film that is made up of different short stories. It includes such fantastic segments as "Casey at the Bat," "Peter and the Wolf," "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met," and many others.

7. Melody Time - 1948

Disney / Via

Melody Time is similar to Make Mine Music in that it is also a collection of Disney animated shorts. It includes classic stories like "Pecos Bill," "The Legend of Johnny Appleseed," "Little Toot," and others.

8. A Goofy Movie - 1995

Disney / Via

A Goofy Movie is about single dad Goofy and his teenage son Max. All Max wants is to be cool and impress a girl at school, and all Goofy wants is to have a close relationship with his son. At first glance this film may not seem like much more than a kid movie, but there is so much heart and emotion present that it should not be overlooked.

9. The Three Caballeros - 1944

Disney / Via

Donald Duck, along with his friends Panchito and Jose Carioca, take an exciting trip to Latin America by way of an assortment of fun stories as well as a flying sarape. It includes beautiful music and wonderful tales such as "The Flying Gauchito" and "The Cold-Blooded Penguin."

10. The Black Cauldron - 1985

Disney / Via

Taran is a young boy who dreams of adventure but is stuck as a lowly pig-keeper. But when the pig is stolen he learns that it possesses a powerful magic that could mean horrible things if put in evil hands. He sets forth on a dangerous adventure to rescue the pig and save everyone from the evil Horned King. This film is very different from other Disney fare because it is unusually dark and depressing. It is not your typical true love's kiss story, and as such it deserves our attention.
