Multiversity: Guidebook Review

Multiversity is a comic that is currently being published by DC comics and written by Grant Morrison with art by various artists. This is possibly the greatest comic Grant Morrison has written. Here is a review of the newest issue.

Multiversity: Guidebook #1 Review

Wow! This was on a whole different level than anything else that came out this month. Stop reading now if you don't want any SPOILERS.

This issue explained every Earth that is currently in the DC Multiverse continuity except for seven of them. This issue was insane! So much was packed into this issue! 7.99 is a steep price, but one that is well worth it for something this great. Every single issue of Multiversity has been better than the last, but I seriously do not know if the next issue is going to be better than this one.

This issue throws around quite a few names, some of these names have faces attached to them in the New 52, but for others this will be their first appearance. Kamandi is one such character that has not been present in the New 52 yet. As the cover reveals, Kamandi is "the Last Boy on Earth". He is the last intelligent human being on the planet. He is living in a post-apocalyptic world where humans are slaves to the humanoid animals. This was a great intro to the classic Jack Kirby character as he is teamed up with Prince Tuftan and Ben Boxer to find Flower. Ben Boxer reveals with the power of his "Cyclo Heart" and "Brother Eye", he is able to become "BiOMAC"! An incredibly crazy reveal! Morrison's version of Ben Boxer on Earth-51 is a combination of Ben Boxer and another classic Kirby character, "O.M.A.C." I loved this instantly.

This issue gets even better beyond this god-like figure of two classic Kirby characters. The old continuity of DC, the Crisis events, and even Flashpoint are explained to be in continuity (you're gonna have to read the issue to see how because it is too much to explain without the images). My biggest gripe with the New 52 is the complete dismissal of all, but two series of the previous continuity. This fixed most of my problems with DC. I couldn't believe that Morrison reestablished Final Crisis, one of my favorite DC books, and he reestablished the old continuity in a way that works with the reboot (Again see how by reading the issue).

This issues has pictures of 44 Earths, superhero teams (if the Earth has one), and a brief description of each Earth. DC could just about double what they're putting out if they find writers on Morrison's level to write these series. Earth 2 has a comic so why shouldn't Earth 17, 30, 39, 41, or any of the others? Morrison wrote some incredibly interesting descriptions of the Earths and I would love to see them explored beyond this series.

I cannot wait for the next issue and to see how this overall series plays out. I am now officially interested in reading DC's upcoming one-shot format event "Convergence" because of this series and this issue in particular. I highly recommend this issue and the series as a whole. READ IT! READ IT! Your mind will be blown and you will fall in love with comics all over again. The only con to this is this issue will ruin you for what else came out this week. I know it certainly ruined me.

Again, for one final time, I must tell you to read this issue. It was fantastic and definitely worth the 7.99 + tax. It will make your day and ruin you for all other comics.
