Give Comics A Listen: Podcasts About Comics

Got some free time? Want to learn about how creators got into comics? Or are you confused about the continuity of X-Men and need some help understanding it all like I do? Well here are two fantastic podcasts that are worth your time.

If you haven't read any of my previous articles or don't have a good sense for who I am, then know this: I love to talk about comics, sci-fi, and all other aspects of "Geek" or "Nerd" culture. This also includes listening to other people discuss them. So in my travels to find interesting discussions about comics I have come across two that I think are absolutely stellar. Those are "Let's Talk Comics" with host Jim Viscardi and "Rachael and Miles X-Plain the X-Men" with hosts Rachael and Miles. I'm going to give some brief info and links to each podcast's home-world. So be like my Brad Pitt .gif and get your groove on with these two podcasts!

Rachel and Miles X-Plain the X-Men

This podcast was recommended to me by one of my friends a while back and I've been a loyal listener ever since. I eagerly await Sundays when a new episode is uploaded, but enough about me and more about this podcast.

This podcast is hosted by Rachel and Miles, a husband and wife dynamic duo, that are enormous X-Men fans. These two have read most, if not all of, the X-Men titles dating all the way back to the original run by Jack "the King" Kirby and Stan Lee in 1963. This also includes X-Men spinoff titles such as Excalibur, New Mutants,Cyclops, and the list goes on. They're mission is to try and make sense of the absolutely insane continuity that is X-Men. They do a great job at it because they're fans that are passionate about their favorite series so they want to do it justice! The two of them are hilarious and love making jokes about the ridiculous things that happen in the comics.

Obviously, you should listen to this podcast from the beginning because they're trying to explain the continuity. You, as a listener, have to listen from the beginning in order to best understand it (plus you'll miss out on some really great jokes like "Lazer-wolf" if you don't).

Their blog also has video reviews for the newer issues of X-titles that come out every month, "As Mentioned" posts which are elaborations from their episodes, a store for T-shirts and other funny creations they sell, and (almost as important as their podcast episodes) a link to their Patreon account for listeners to donate to keep the show alive and so that they may do other fun activities for the listeners. Give them a listen to, they're GREAT!

Let's Talk Comics

This is a podcast I discovered simply by googling "comic podcasts". "Let's Talk Comics" is hosted by Jim Viscardi, a former Marvel Entertainment PR employee. Jim goes into great detail with his guests which are the creators of the comics we all love so much. He talks to editors, artists, writers, anybody involved in the comic making progress. If you want to learn about how creators got to where they are currently then this is the podcast for you.

Jim goes into great detail with his guests and it is incredibly insightful. He has had guests such as Rick Remender (Uncanny Avengers, Fear Agent, Captain America), Eric Powell (the Goon, Big Trouble In Little China), Chris Burnham (Batman Inc., Nixon's Pals), Scott Allie (Dark Horse Editor, Abe Sapien), and the list goes on. Jim asks some great questions that help probe the minds of the creators. While on the show, the creators talk about anything and everything that influenced them and helped them to get to where they are now. I dream one day or creating a comic book for the world to read so this podcast is invaluable for all the information it provides in how to produce paid work.
