10 Albums To Prepare For Dogma By Nokeys

Dogma will be out on October the 24th. Now, you might or might not be aware of this and you might or might not have listened to previous albums by Nokeys: this is not the point. The point is that we can guarantee that you will be blown away by this new release. If you are anything like us, that is. Think old synthesizers found under a pile of rubble in the basement of an abandoned building. Imagine blowing the dust away and finding that what is broken can be fixed, that the trapped sound of three decades can be set free. Think old studio gear that you bring home after getting it ridiculously cheap at an auction. You didn't even have to try that hard cause no-one else was going to bid for those old tapes, all covered in dust. When new music comes out, the first thing most people ask is "what does it sound like?". Dogma doesn't sound like anything. That's why it is a Dogma, you have to take the whole package as given, it's a leap of faith. It sounds like Göteborg and Berlin. It sounds like Paris and certain clubs in Rome that are long gone. It sounds black and steel-cold and electronic. It sounds like Bach played by thunderclouds. There's nothing more we could tell you about Dogma right now, but we can help you get into the right state of mind, waiting for the moment when you finally get to listen to it. So, bound as we are by the Laws of the Internet, we set off for this new adventure by making a list, namely a list of 10 albums that you should listen to in order to know what the hell all this was about. Here they are.

    1. Speak & Spell - Depeche Mode (1981)

This is where it starts. Not the whole syhtpop adventure, of course, but a whole new universe within it, that led to a still ongoing evolution of sound. We all go back there occasionally, you know you do too. From time to time.

    2. Edelweiß - Joachim Witt (1982)

Did we mention that Dogma sounds like Germany? Well, we did say Berlin, but there is more to it than that. Die Neue Deutsche Welle, which is the correct way of saying German New Wave, is something you should get yourself acquainted with. It's not just about synths and dark pop: the songwriting goes deep and drives the message home.

    3. Moderat II - Moderat (2009)

Electronic music pulses with its time and this is not a trip down memory lane. Moderat caught the spirit of the turning decade in this entrancing album. As Rimbaud would say, Il faut être absolument moderne.

    4. Blue Train - John Coltrane (1957)

Cause he got it all before. It is one thing to catch the Zeitgeist, quite another to make something that stands across the changing times and looks Eternity right in the face.

    5. Movement - New Order (1981)

There are albums that mark pivotal points in the history of music. This is one such album.

    6. The Man Machine - Kraftwerk (1978)

Eons before their time, Kraftwerk traced the path for much of the electronic culture to come. History is done by learning from our past and looking towards our future, shaping it to what we want it to be.

    7. Closer - Joy Division (1980)

Cause if you have not listened to this, you are simply not ready for anything else.

    8. Floodland - The Sisters of Mercy (1987)

There's more to life, music and rock'n'roll than just guitars. Keybords, for instance.

    9. The Ideal Crash - dEus (1999)

It takes pluck to experiment and do things the hard way. You really don't need to compromise when the music is this good.

    10. Heroes - David Bowie (1977)

    Just because you should, really.
