This Garden Light Show Is All Your Fairytale Dreams Come True

Your childhood fantasies just came true.

The Vivid Festival is back in Sydney and for the first time ever, the world's largest outdoor art gallery expands into the Royal Botanic Garden.

The harbourside garden typically closes at 5:30pm this time of year. But for the 23 days of the festival, it’ll stay open ’til 11pm to show revelers the magic that goes on behind its gates after dark.

And boy is it a treat.

The garden's participation in this year's lights show coincides with its own 200th anniversary celebration. But after what it’s shown us this year, let’s hope it continues to join the light spectacle in the years to come.

The harbour wall flanking the gardens looks like a yellow brick road, lined with bright, golden lights. It paves the way to the many mystical wonders of the garden.

Including this spellbinding castle, the home of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music IRL.

Nearby is Will o' the Wisps, a patch of land where tiny fairies have settled to show off their true colours, but only in the dark of night.

The grass transforms into patches of unicorn dust.

And trees turn into a kaleidoscope forest.

With the mother of all trees, the Moreton Bay Fig Tree displaying the veins that keep it alive.

But the clear favourite at this magical fairy garden is Richard Neville's Cathedral of Lights, a tunnel of tiny flower-shaped bulbs. It’s basically straight out of your sweetest dreams.
