On December 3, 1984, there was a major gas leak at the Union Carbide Corp pesticide factory in Bhopal, India.
Now, 30 years later, someone set up a Twitter handle called 1984 Bhopal, and began recreating the incident via a series of tweets written to look like a real-time account.
It was a night like this when it happened. Thirty years ago.
In the hours that followed, the account continued to tweet a grizzly account of the atmosphere that night. The tweets mirrored the thoughts of those immediately affected by the gas leak.
Aziza: At about 12.30 am I woke to the sound of Ruby coughing badly. The room was not dark, there was a street light nearby.
The room is filled with a white cloud. I hear a great noise of people shouting. They are yelling ‘bhaago, bhaago!’
My son Mohsin is coughing. I am coughing too. With each breath as if we are breathing in fire.My eyes are burning
It is very cold but we are not feeling cold at all. We are in our night clothes, not even dupattas or burkhas.
Lots and lots of people are running, screaming for help, vomiting, falling down, unconscious.
There are people lying on the ground. They look like they are dead. If we stay here, we will die too. We most go.
I am choking, retching.
The night is full of screams.
We reach the railway track. There are bodies everywhere. Some alive but unable to move. They are coughing, vomiting, crying for help, dying.
People are pouring water from pots and buckets on unconscious relatives, trying to wake them up. But many are already dead.
The tragedy happened 30 years ago, but people still remember the horror that was that night.
Today, 3rd December 2014, 30 years after that night, please say: "We are all Bhopalis."
The account holder later clarified that the tweets were so that people still remember the tragedy that happened 30 years ago.
