14 Struggles Of Having A Non-Indian Name In India

    "Where are you really from?"

    1. It's not just baristas that you dread saying your name to, it's pretty much everybody.

    2. You have to deal with people questioning your ties to your own country.

    3. And if they accept you're Indian, their next assumption is that you're from Goa... Even if you're really, truly not.

    4. You're used to people pronouncing your name in ways that defy the use of actual language.

    5. Or worse: They question why your parents didn't give you a name that was easier to remember or to pronounce.

    6. People you meet for the first time always compare you to random cultural identities that have no relation to your actual namesakes.

    7. If your name is a variation of a more common western name, chances are people aren't going to know the difference. Or care.

    8. People will constantly ask what your name means, and why that meaning has any relevance to your life.

    9. And when you tell them the actual meaning, they give you the "that can't be right" face.

    10. You literally cannot call to order food because no one on the other line can understand when you say this is Sue Ellen calling to place an order.

    11. And you've gotten great at responding to random sounds being yelled at coffee shops because there's no chance they're actually yelling your name.

    12. You finally reach the point where you don't even remember what the correct pronunciation of your own name is.

    13. But at the end of the day, being special and unique isn't suuuch a terrible problem to have.

    14. Even if it means you spend a looot of time correcting people.
