Why There's Still Hope In Puerto Rico's Independent Music Scene

Puerto Rico is known for many different things. But musically, most people today think about Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony. Reggeton artists like Daddy Yankee and Don Omar are also known around the world. But Puerto Rico's music scene is much more than the pop sellouts and "gangster" reggeton.

Club 77 is the newest go to in the music scene. It is located in Rio Piedras, walking distance from the University of Puerto Rico. It is one of many bars that surround campus. Like the others, Club 77 hosts rappers to punk bands. They host 80s prom nights and drag queen shows.

    Nuestro Son

Nuestro Son is probably the most diverse of all of the bars part of this post. Here you can find jazz musicians, rock bands, and rappers, to mention a few. It is surprisingly local for it to be located in Old San Juan, not too far from the cruise ship dock.

The music scene in Puerto Rico varies. No one genre defines the music scene because most groups or individual artist can't be defined by one single genre. Everyone seems to be collaborating with everybody or just doing everything. There are rappers working with acoustic bands. Then there are bands that have a reggae feel in one song and a hard rock in another. Musicians are so diverse that there is music for everyone in Puerto Rico's independent music scene.
