10 Spookier Words Than SPOOKY ITSELF!

Halloween is around the corner, and you're probably tired of the word "spooky." Show off your ominous vocabulary this All Hallow's Eve.

(adj): having an evil appearance : looking likely to cause something bad, harmful, or dangerous to happen

Not the most uncommon word on this list, but one that isn't used NEARLY as much as "spooky." It evokes the writings of Bram Stoker; an older, more mature - even more European - understanding of spookiness.

Used in A Sentence:

Becki S.: "Oh man, that guy dressed up as Jim Carey in the Mask WON'T LEAVE ME ALONE."

You (slowly, ala Alan Rickman) : "I bet his intentions are...sinister."

Becki S.: "Uh, what?"

You: "He's trying to sleep with you. Sorry, let's go to the other side of the room. He'll get distracted when they start playing Pumpkin Beer Pong and forget about you."

(adj) : suggesting that something bad is going to happen in the future, or being or exhibiting an omen

Here's a great word that no one seems to be using! But why not? Use it whenever you feel like something isn't going too well.

Used In A Sentence:

Marko: "Oh man, I just had five shots of fireball."

You (politely sipping Catcus Cooler in red solo cup): "Oh...yay? I'm the DD so I'm just livin' vicariously-"

Marko: "My stomach doesn't feel too good."

(Marko bends over, stomach gurgling)

You: "Oh that's ominous."

(verb): to confuse someone completely, to perplex the mind, to make mysterious or obscure

This beautiful word really will add the color and magic to your language. It's an elegant word that just seems to bounce on the tongue. Hold onto the "sssss" to really emphasize the spookiness of it!

Freshman Penelope: Whoa! WHAT! It's already 12:30 AM? Halloween is already over?

You: Yeah it's pretty mysssstifying!

Freshman Penelope: What? Do you know Parseltongue?

You: Huh, no? You like Harry Potter?!

Freshman Penelope: What? WHAT? IT'S SO LOUD I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE MUSIC. (TO MARKO: HEY HALLOWEEN'S ALREADY OVER! IT'S 12:30 AM!

(noun): the spirit of a dead person, the exact likeness of a living person seen usually just before death as an apparition, ghost or specter, an insubstantial form or semblance - shadow, or a barely visible gaseous or vaporous column

You're gonna need a lot of fresh ways to talk about ghosts. Here's one a cut about the rest.

You (at party): We've all heard of the Ghostbusters, but what about the Wraithwranglers?

(adj): alarmingly or eerily frightening

This word gives your whole body a tingle, like spiders racing up your back (bite you bite you, bloood rushing down, blooood rushing down!)

Used In A Sentence:

Jessica: STOP IT, "Monster" just came on - the version with Nicki's killer rap. Let's dance!

You: Just the thought of dancing with all these people around is spine-chilling. But Nicki Minaj's rap game is killer in this song, so I'm not going to talk to anyone for the next 6 minutes and soak it all in.

(adj): very unusual in a way that does not seem natural, existing outside of nature, exceeding what is natural or regular, or inexplicable by ordinary means

This word is not used nearly enough. It's almost falling out of the english language! Show off your spookily good S.A.T. scores by dropping this vocab term!
