What you see in the image above is Weefu, one of the millions of cats and kittens who meet their suicidal end in the US. Weefu, according to his owners, was a generally happy kitten, and it came as a surprise that on one of the family's trips Weefu met his tragic end off of a rock.
But Weefu is only one of millions of cats and kittens who take the jump per year. Since 2008, the US has seen an increase in this sort of behavior. No one knows what has caused it, but pop culture is increasingly blaming it on the formation of the death metal band "Severe Mutilation", which was originally named "Bloodspill". Severe Mutilation vocalist Wesley denies this claim, saying
The name came from the lyrics, and it is very unlikely that any cat would kill themselves because they heard the name [Severe Mutilation].
Sadly, scientists have not discovered any trends in cat suicides, which means there are no early symptoms. The safest thing we can advise you to do is have a leash on your cat if you're going somewhere they could potentially take "the jump".
