Listen — some things that take certain authors whole novels to convey, some authors can accomplish in under 100 pages. Sheer terror is very much one of those things.

Heck, maybe it's something straight out of a book that SAYS the word "scary" on it, like the "High Beams" short story from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz.
