So a while back, I stumbled on a Reddit thread about books that were so disturbing, they actually traumatized people. As an avid lover of horror myself, I naturally added most of these suggestions to my personal reading list.
But one of the recommended novels — I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid — really stuck with me, solely because of just how surreal and, simply put, scary it was.
Well, the book has since been adapted into a film for Netflix and, whew buddy, just check out this trailer:
The basic bones of the story are pretty well summed up by the title, tbh: A young woman travels with her boyfriend to meet his family for the first time, but all the while she's...well...thinking of ending things.
However, upon arriving at his family's home, things become increasingly strange increasingly fast — like this very good pup doing a very LONG shake for no reason.
And his parents, while kind, seem equally odd.
As you probably guessed by this point, that's when some REAL FREAKY KIND OF WEIRD stuff starts happening all over the place.
And here's where I'm going to stop talking about the plot because, frankly, the less you know going in, the better. Plus, the trailer does an amazing job of building suspense by showing you very little, so I'm not going to spoil that!
The movie, while based on Reid's novel, is written and directed by Charlie Kaufman, who — if you've seen any of his previous work* — is the ideal person for bringing this surreal and spooky story to life.
And — if you're still not convinced this is going to be one hell of a horror/thriller — I have two words for you: TONI. COLLETTE.
