Surprise! Surprise! Tax Hike Isn't Stopping Mexicans From Buying Soda

In spite of a 10% tax hike 2 years ago, Mexicans still can't get enough of their favorite sugary drinks.

    Lots o' Revenue

The tax hike has reportedly raised more than $2 billion dollars since the tax went into effect in January 2014.

It was the government's attempt to curb the obesity rates and also try to prevent diabetes, which is prevalent among low-income people in Mexico. Who are we kidding? Soda is cheap. We can practically get 72 ounces of soda at any and all convenience stores in the States for under a buck.

    Everyone Loves Coca-Cola!

According to the Wall Street Journal, the country's largest Coca-Cola bottler (Cola Femsa SAB) saw an increase of 5.5%, while the second largest bottler (Arca Continental SAB) saw an increase of 11% in soda volumes since the tax hike.

    Let's Double It!

So now soda tax supporters are pushing for an even higher tax. For the people safety, of course. The extra revenue is just the cherry on top, we presume.

Senator Armando Rios Piter wants to double the tax to 20%.
