The UK government has condemned Russian state-owned media for spreading "disinformation" about Boris Johnson's health, as the prime minister remained in hospital under observation on Monday.

The prime minister's official spokesperson said at a briefing for journalists on Monday afternoon that Johnson had a "comfortable night" at St Thomas' hospital in London, after he was admitted at around 8pm yesterday.

He was still in hospital under observation, the spokesperson added.

On Sunday night, the Russian state-owned website Sputnik tweeted that Johnson would "receive lung ventilation", citing a "health source".

But Downing Street said that this was untrue and an example of "disinformation".

The UK government would press social media companies to prevent the spread of disinformation such as this, the prime minister's spokesperson said.

Number 10 will provide updates as soon as there is anything new to say about Johnson's condition, the spokesperson said.

Johnson remained in charge of the government and was continuing to receive his red box carrying official documents.

Monday morning's "war cabinet" meeting of ministers and officials was led by the foreign secretary Dominic Raab.
