Nine Ways The 16-Bit Toy Story Game Improves On The Movie

The 16-Bit Toy Story game is a surreal adaptation of the film and is just plainly amazing! We got down nine reasons why!

1.) The Pull String Can Be Used as a Weapon

When I was watching Toy Story, I kept wondering, when is the pull string going to be used to tie up tiny toy trains and get caught in propellors as it is being used as a weapon!? Well, the game at long last answered my prayers.

2.) Four Second Sight Gags Gets Their Own Level

Remember that scene where Woody and Buzz make their way through Pizza Planet dressed up as a soda and a hamburger? Well, did you know you were watching just the abridged version? That's right, if you played the game, you could see the true arduous nature of that journey, dodging soda cans and enormous teenage legs wandering through.

Enormous teenager legs are like, the Hitler of this very specific Toy Story level.

3.) There's a Doom Parody in It

In the Claw machine, you go through the empty terrifying hallways from Doom's Mars, only you drop adorable three eyed aliens into bins with other three eyed aliens. At this point, the game's developers are doing whatever they want. I like to imagine this is Doom before whatever war hit it. Just a cartoon cowboy inside a claw machine putting aliens into bins. War is real ugly.

4.) A Deleted Scene Becomes a Level of Its Own

In the original draft of Toy Story, Woody was to have a nightmare, an enormous Buzz Lightyear spirit was to take his place in Andy's heart as he was relegated to a surrealist toy box. The scene ended up being incorporated in some form into Toy Story 2, but before that the game adapted it into its own level. A boss fight where you shielf yourself from spooky ghost fireballs as beloved children's character Buzz Lightyear comes back to you as a faceless demon. A friend confided in me that this level scared him as a kid, and it's not hard to see why. Good job, video game.

5.) The Box Art Looks Like Woody is Ordering a Hit

Which is just kind of odd. The poster was just all flight and anxiety, which actually illustrates the movie itself pretty well. But this is the video game buddy! All about action packed hits, and tense pointing! The tensest pointing!

Also, note the intensely 3-D experience. The 90's were God's greatest gift to those who adore hyperbole as much as I do.

6.) You Can Play as a Wallace Shawn Character At Long Last

Do any of you ever watch "My Dinner with Andre'" and go, "This is great, but if only I could play as that whimsical spout of silliness and charm, Wallace Shawn". It's a common thought , but before that only expressed in fiction! The 16 Bit Toy Story game finally make it a reality! Run Rex Run! Now say "Inconceivable!" Ha ha, delightful!

7.) Knocking Buzz Out the Window is to Drive the RC Car Through an Infinite Dali-esque Maze

This is a level where you, as the RC Car must ride along an infinite desk, through a maze of dice, tennis balls, greeting cards, sodas, books, to knock four Buzz Lightyears out the window. You may remember in the movie, the scene was four second long. Here it is an endless expanse past nightmare. What was a brash act of passion in the film is here a cold blooded drive to a sinful eternity through the desk equivalent of this painting.

And when you finished you replay the first level, only this time all your friends hate you. It's very cool.

8.) It Parodies Mario Kart Too!

You have to remember, in that era of video games, you were lucky if your character had more than two expressions. But a whole new game style!? Perfect! Wonderful! Bravissimo! Of course, it's a race against no one but your own health bar.

Which I guess makes it the most realistic race of them all.

9.) The Whole Affair Feels Like a Collection of Memories Strung Together by the Subconscious

Your favorite gags from the film are given weight. The story is less the story and more an expression of how you feel about the story. It's video games as music with characters we love!It's how an impassioned man, slightly goofy man would describe this movie to you after just seeing it in a theatre. Which is just wonderful. And if you disagree, you best fear my weapon!
