25 Times "Friday Night Lights" Made Us Feel Too Much

It's hard to have clear eyes when your heart's so full you're sobbing.

Posted on

1. When Jason Street got injured in the very first episode and you immediately knew you were in for an emotional journey.

NBC / DirectTV

"Give all of us gathered here tonight the strength to remember that life is so very fragile. We are all vulnerable, and we will all, at some point in our lives fall. We will all fall. We must carry this in our hearts...that what we have is special. That it can be taken from us, and when it is taken from us, we will be tested. We will be tested to our very souls. We will now all be tested. It is these times, it is this pain, that allows us to look inside ourselves."

2. When Tim finally visited Jason in the hospital and Jason confronted him about not showing up sooner.

NBC / DirectTV

"While I’m in here dealing with all this by myself and my best friend’s out there putting a four-barreled carb in his damn truck…Is that what’s important right now? Answer me this, Timmy. What happened to “Texas forever”? Huh? What happened to living large? What happened to that eternal bond that you used to love to throw around when I was still healthy and headed towards the NFL, huh? I need you here, Tim. I expect you here. You are my best friend. Grace period's over."

4. When Coach asked Tami to let go of her adult sensibilities for a second and just remember what it felt like to be a free little kid playing outside.

NBC / DirectTV

"Close your eyes. Pretend you’re 10 years old again. Just playing. You’re just playing. I wanna play football."

7. When Tyra's mom encouraged her and tried to wipe the doubt out of her heart.

NBC / DIrectTV

"You surprise me, honey. Ever since the minute I knew you were coming, 'til right now. You are a wonder. I have no idea what's gonna happen with you. Not a clue. I have no idea what kind of college you're gonna go to, or anything. But I know one thing, with all my heart: That you are gonna have everything that you are dreaming of."

8. When Tyra finally finished the perfect college admissions essay and let us know it was perfectly OK to want.

NBC / DIrectTV

"Two years ago, I was afraid of wanting anything. I figured wanting would lead to trying and trying would lead to failure. But now I find I can’t stop wanting. I want to fly somewhere on first class. I want to travel to Europe on a business trip. I want to get invited to the White House. I want to learn about the world. I want to surprise myself. I want to be important. I want to be the best person I can be. I want to define myself instead of having others define me. I want to win and have people be happy for me. I want to lose and get over it. I want to not be afraid of the unknown. I want to grow up and be generous and big-hearted, the way people have been with me. I want an interesting and surprising life. It’s not that I think I’m going to get all these things. I just want the possibility of getting them.”

10. When Matt felt sad and abandoned by everyone in his life but Coach Taylor had his back.

NBC / DirectTV

Coach: "You better stop being so damn selfish and stop feeling sorry for yourself!"

Saracen: "Shut up! Just shut up! You don't care about me! You left me for a better job! Your daughter left me for a better guy! Carlotta left me for Guatemala! My dad left me for a damn war! Everybody leaves me! What is wrong with me?"

Coach: [Pause] "Nothing's wrong with you. There's nothing wrong with you at all."

14. When Tim lectured Lyla to get her life together, but made sure to let her know how deeply he cared about her.

NBC / DirectTV

"OK, you know what, I'm not here to solve all your problems, Garrity, I'm not. I'm here to support you no matter what choice you make, that's why I'm here. I'm your boyfriend, I think I'm a pretty darn good one. You know what? Your dad threw you a good curveball. But this self-pity that I've been seeing, it's gotta stop. You're better than that, OK?...Did I just say I love you? Did I? No? 'Cause I'm kind of madly in love with you."

15. When Street decides to stay in New Jersey with his girlfriend and son, and Tim gives him a proper goodbye.

NBC / DirectTV

Riggins: "I hope you get everything – I hope you get everything you want. But no matter what happens in there, you're always gonna be my best friend. And you deserve to be happy."

Street: "Thank you." [Pause] "Texas forever."

16. When Becca found out she was pregnant and asked Tami for advice.

NBC / DirectTV

Becky: "We don’t have any money. I’m in the tenth grade. It was my first time, and I threw it away. And I don’t want to throw my life away. It’s just, it’s just really obvious that my mom wants me to have this abortion. Because I was her mistake, and she has just struggled and hurt, every day. And she wanted better. And I knew better. And I was just thinking, you know, forget what she wants. Like, what do I want? Maybe I could take care of this baby, and maybe I would be good at it. And I could love it, and I would be there for it. And then I just think about how awful it would be, if I had the baby, and then I spent the rest of my life resenting him. Or her."

Tami:
"I would tell her...to think about her life. And think about what's important to her and what she wants. And I'd tell her she's in a real rough spot. And then I would support whatever decision she made."

20. When Becky moved out and you realized just how much her presence had meant to Mindy.

NBC / DirectTV

"I feel like you think that I'm just gonna leave and forget everything that you guys did for me. But that's not happening. Because I love Stevie. And I'm gonna love the twins just as much. And I'm gonna be over at y'all's house all the time whether you like it or not. We're family."

24. When Coach Taylor told his wife that he wanted her to take her dream job as Dean of Admissions at a college in Philadelphia and that he'd follow her wherever she went.
