Why Assuming Really Does Make An Ass Out Of U And Me

We've all heard this trite catchphrase that our parents pinned to our onesies and then later in life transferred to our trending high-waisted denim shorts. The fact that this saying was actually punny made it easier to remember, but didn't actually make it any easier to follow. Every person makes assumptions everyday and I would argue even multiple times a day, not realizing until it's too late that they've done it yet again.

So why do we assume? Well, it's natural. We forget that we don't have celestial powers that allow us to know every thought that people have, especially those concerning us. We truly believe that we know how others see us, based on how we see ourselves, and then start creating false stories from there.

In today's society people are always assuming that others think like they act do, act like they do, feel like they do, and when their theory turns out wrong they feel like crap.

I've assumed that because I love someone and put my whole heart into our relationship, they'll do the same. Wrong. I've assumed that because I tripped over my words while meeting someone new, they must have thought I was stupid. Wrong.

I am not an almighty power that can close my eyes and peek into the minds of everyone I encounter. And even if I could, I would find that all these minds are different! It sounds so obvious, but we all operate so differently, so why can't we remember that?

So next time you meet someone and they're not smiling, don't jump to the conclusion that it's because they don't like you. They could be having family problems or maybe the server got their order wrong or maybe they just have a nasty case of RBC. Who knows?!
