What Guys Look For Vs. What Girls Look For

The lists are more common than you think!

So we all know that Men are from Mars, and Women are from Venus...

We are all taught from a young age that girls and boys are very different. Apparently we like different colors, activities...in fact a catchy saying has even told us that we are from different planets (which is weird because I feel like I was born on Earth like a normal human being).

As girls we are taught that boys are "manly" and usually are into girls who act and look feminine; after all, we are supposed to be their counter-parts.

Let's be real, you have to be pretty freaking girly to counter this guy. I mean, you basically have to live in Victoria's Secret lingerie and walk with the gentle grace of a figure skater.

And of course likes and dislikes vary...

Not everyone is going to want the exact same thing when they are looking for a significant other. Some people might specifically like brunettes while others might have a thing for skinny men wearing overalls. The possibilities are endless! The point is, the things that men and women look for are more similar than society would lead you to believe.

1. We're All "Shallow"

I don't know where this idea of caring about what someone looks like makes you shallow, but it's not true. Of course you have to be attracted to the person that you want to start a relationship with! It doesn't mean that they have to be the best-looking man or woman you've ever laid eyes on. It doesn't mean that they have to have rippling abs or "have it all going on." What really matters (to both genders) is that you (specifically) are attracted to this person. Most people are hooked by looks and stay for the personality. Looks aren't all that matter but that doesn't mean that they aren't important.

2. Both Guys and Girls will Compare their New Boo-Thangs to their Exes

Sorry but it's true, you will be compared to their past boyfriends and girlfriends. This doesn't mean that you should feel insecure and nervous. Maybe their ex was a crazy mad scientist who thought that trips to the lab were romantic? Or maybe (more realistically) their last ex never appreciated them and now they're looking for someone who will treat them right? Either way, when on the prowl for a new relationship both genders will find themselves in this phase of mentally drawing venn diagrams.

3. Personality Matters to Men and Women

Enter another myth-buster here! Many people seem to believe that men are just about the size of a girl's waist and her @#^! and &$%. HA! Men and women BOTH care about personality. Sure the stereotypes are relatively true and women tend to place more value on a man's morals and what he chooses to do with his free time. In general, men do seem to give off the vibe that they only really need a girl with a laid-back personality who's chill enough to be a bro but doesn't look like one. But this is really only true for those "casual relationships" that you never seem to know how to label. Once things get serious, trust me, guys will start looking deeper into if their girl's personality is compatible to theirs.

4. Not All Men Want One-Night Stands and Not All Women Want a Serious Relationship

Lo and behold yet another stereotype about the gender differences in relationships. Men are seen as animalistic creatures who only care about sex and start running and soon as they start to get any feelings. Women on the other hand are seen as fragile, emotional beings who always need to be in an official relationship when they are dating someone. I'm here to tell you that both of these stereotypes are wrong! Not all men are just in it for the physical aspects...some really do want to take you on dates and commit. And not all women on the other hand feel the need to make their man commit. Sometimes they're the one who seems more "like a guy" than the guy himself.

At the end of the day, when people are looking for a new relationship, it looks very common across the board no matter what gender stereotypes would have you believe. Again, this does not mean that everyone is looking for the same thing! It's very important to know what you want and go out and get it. Don't force yourself to change to any standards and don't force your bae to do so either. You are a catch just as you are and so are they! Do what makes you happy and be with the person that makes you happy.
