6 Things You Should Do During Your Degree (Besides Actually Studying)

Because these are the years that mark the start of your adult life, and that's kind of a big deal.

    1. Join some clubs!

It's a tired old phrase, but university is all about stepping out of your comfort zone. You're probably in a strange new town, surrounded by strange new people, and on top of that, your mom isn't around to do your laundry anymore. It's mental. So even though it's scary, you're going to have to find ways to put yourself out there. And things like clubs and societies are the best way to do that! Trust me, there's one for everything. Tea drinking, LARPing, juggling ... Whatever takes your fancy. And if you've got an interest so niche that there isn't a society devoted to it yet, MAKE ONE! It looks great on a CV, and it'll attract the people who share your interest. Easy peasy.

    2. Do stuff that looks good on a CV

Yeah it sounds boring, but it doesn't have to be. If you like writing, join the uni newspaper, or organise an open mic poetry night. If you're really into your society, work your way up the ranks and become the treasurer, or even the head of the club. It shows employers that you're a responsible go getter and that you have those valuable leadership skills, or whatever buzzwords they're looking for these days. Learn to use your passions to your advantage!

    3. Save that dolla

Yes money is going to be tight, that's pretty much a given at this point. If you can manage a part time job, awesome! It's great experience and the money will really help. If you can't, try to put a little of your student loan aside each month for a rainy day. You never know when you might need it.

    4. Travel!

Remember that rainy day money? Well if you had the chance to save some, and if, by the end of your degree you haven't needed to repair your laptop too often, then my advice is to dig out a chunk of it and blow it on travelling, or better yet, maybe even a gap-yah. If you're into that kind of thing, you'll really regret not doing it at least once before you settle down. If you're not into that kind of thing, that's cool too. You do you.

    5. Get to know yourself

This one is a pretty big deal.

One of the perks of being in a new place surrounded by new people is that you can forget all about the person you were back in high school, or junior school or wherever else you were maybe made to feel like you were a little bit on the freaky side. Or if you were little miss perfect in some fancy boarding school, maybe you wanna try having blue hair for a change. It's cool, this isn't the girls locker room anymore. You don't have to be afraid. Or maybe you just need some time by yourself. Whatever it takes, as long as it's not hurting yourself or someone else, go ahead and do it. Learn to love the person that you are. Now, before you miss your chance.

    6. And finally HAVE FUN

While you're busy studying, and joining societies, and getting to know yourself and just generally being awesome, don't forget to enjoy yourself. These are the best years of your life. Just remember to stay safe, make friends, and call your parents every now and again to let them know how great you're doing. You're in for a fantastic ride.
