Some Aussie Uni Students Called Out The Tampon Tax

They made a video and it was completely glorious.

Remember when we all thought that Thrift Shop by Macklemore would be one of those songs that came and then disappeared forever? Boy, were we wrong. Fast forward four years and it's still haunting us...but in the best way possible.

The University of Queensland Law Society cast decided to make a parody of Thrift Shop this year to cast some shade on the Australian Federal Government's tax on sanitary products.

Remember last year when everyone was up in arms about the fact that sanitary products are taxed but condoms aren't?

Because they're a "luxury" item?

We all signed that petition but nothing has happened yet. So these uni students decided to raise the issue again...

Cue UQ's own Macklemore strutting down the street accompanied by two tampons sipping cups of "blood"...as you do.

The video pays a lot of homage to the original Thrift Shop video...

But at the same time, this video aims to shed light on a topic which is still often considered taboo. It's also something that a large majority of the population still don't know is a thing.

The crazy fact that women get taxed 10% on all sanitary products. So that's once a month, twelve times a year. Crazy right? I think so.

But this video is definitely not crazy. It tells it like it is.

Would you ever see the real Macklemore rapping about pads?

I didn't think so.

The video of course features crazy dancing, only this time it takes place in the beauty aisle of supermarkets.

It shows doctors and politicians and even a spoof of those ladies from Brand Power outlining the benefits of a menstrual cup - It's "hella flexible".

Brand Power should always be this honest

The UQ Law Revue happens every year and the cast and crew are generally made up of Law students. They aim create spoofs, parodies of songs and skits of current, newsworthy topics and general Law and university in-jokes.

But generally, whatever the topic, they tell it like it is.

This topic is definitely something that needs more conversation surrounding it and videos like this just help to add to the conversation.

Either way, props to them for dancing in supermarkets and singing about pads.

Since being shared on the 31st of August, the video has been viewed almost 3000 times and the comments on Facebook have been overwhelmingly positive. Could this be the new Defined Lines - the parody of Blurred Lines - by the Auckland Law Revue in 2013?

His face says it all. The Tampon Tax is unfair, discriminatory and outdated. Thank goodness these guys are our lawyers and politicians of our future. There is hope ahead.
