You see beautiful lights from below the surface one night. You swim to the surface, where you see a ship and fireworks. You hear music. You swim up to the ship, where you see a handsome young man standing on the deck playing a strange instrument. You're in love.

START- see eric for the first time

Without being too loud, you try to wave to him through the opening in the side of the ship. The  young man doesn't see you, but his dog does. He comes over to you and licks your face.

You swim home and find your sisters talking together. You describe the young man and ask them if they've ever seen him before.

A little while later, Sebastian finds you at your vanity to tell you your father wants to see you. You swim to his throne. He's FURIOUS. Your sisters told him you went to the surface.

"Daddy, they were all lying!" you plead. "I never went to the surface! I always do what you tell me to do!" Your father looks insulted. "You expect me to believe that? Just the other day we held an important concert for the entire kingdom and YOU were to be the headliner, and you didn't even deign to show up because you were off investigating some shipwreck! You're grounded for a week, Ariel!"

You swim back to your room without a word. You know you'll never see your beloved again, and no one will even see the bitter tears you weep because you're underwater.

You splash water on the dog, who then walks away from you and shakes off next to a very frail, curmudgeonly older man. He asks the young man to take his dog below decks. You watch your love disappear from view.

The dog gets excited and now wants to play. He runs over to the young man, who is standing against the railing and jumps up on him. The young man falls over the side of the ship.

About an hour later, you hear a deep rumbling. A ship is sinking near your kingdom. A man is drowning. It's him!

You swim up to the stunned young man and try to help him. You both look into each other's eyes for a moment before the sailors throw a life raft to him. You hide, but keep eye contact.

He does, about 20 minutes later. You watch him for a while after that. Then, the weather changes drastically. You hear thunder. The sea becomes choppy. It's harder to tread above water.

CRACK! A lightning bolt hits the ship's mast, lighting it on fire! The fire spreads rapidly. There's chaos on the ship.

After the sinking, the night is pitch black. You follow far behind the lifeboat. You're only aware of its path because of the voices of the men inside. An hour passes, then two. The voices become distant. You're exhausted; even in water Eric's muscular body is too much to carry anymore. He's barely breathing. You don't know where you are, but you're not close to shore. You weep as you sink into the water, exhausted, letting Eric go down with you. You watch him drown. You find the ocean floor and sleep immediately, then find your way back to the kingdom the next morning, forever changed.

You had to fight the vicious waves, rain and wind, but it's finally early morning and you've made it to shore. The sun is shining on the young man's beautiful face as you lay him on the sand. And...he's breathing!

You whisper to him, then quietly slip underwater, undetected by the rest of the ship's crew. You swim home. You're so happy with this interaction, you sleep better than you've ever slept. in the morning, you hide behind a rock near the shore, waiting for Eric. But...he never shows.

You whisper your name to the beautiful human man. He smiles at you. As he's hoisted back onboard, he replies "mine's Eric." "What?" reply the sailors.

You return to the shore every day for the next several weeks, but you never see your beloved again. You'll never know that the same night you met him for the first time, Eric's ship sunk, and he drowned while trying to rescue his dog, Max. You slept through the whole thing.

The man approaches. "Hello, I'm Ariel," you say nervously. He is aghast. "A mermaid! Mermaids aren't real! Come, Eric! We must get out of here!"

"Help! Help!" you yell. For a few minutes, it seems like no one is coming. Then, in the distance, you see the same lanky old man from the ship, accompanied by the dog, scrambling toward you.

You flip Eric over and vigorously pat his back, and he successfully coughs up the water. He's awake now. He turns to look at you. "What happened?" he asks.

"I saved you," you whisper gently. A smile spreads across his face. "Thank you." He studies your face. "You're beautiful." You share a kiss. It's perfect.

You go in for a kiss. And...Eric kisses you back! For one brief, beautiful second, you're kissing the human of your dreams. But suddenly, he pulls away. "I...I barely know you," he says. He looks suspicious.

You calm the old man, explaining mermaids are, in fact, real and that your intentions are pure. You explain you were the one who saved Eric. The old man, who introduces himself as Grimsby, lets his guard down and thanks you for saving Prince Eric.

"Yes, of course," laughs Grimsby. "That is his castle." He extends an arm toward it. "It's too bad you're just a mermaid. You're very attractive. We've been looking for a wife for dear Eric!" Eric looks dazed and uncomfortable.

You return the next day, hiding behind a rock. You're excited to see that the young man is walking along the shore, but he's not alone like you'd hoped. A beautiful young woman his age is at his side. You hear bits and pieces of their conversation. As they walk closer to you, you hear him say to her, "I'm just so grateful that you were on this beach when I washed up from the shipwreck." "Of course, my love," she replies. They kiss. Your world has just come crashing down before you! You dive furiously into the sea.

You decide to return later that day. Maybe the young man will be there alone. And your prediction was correct! When you reach the rocky shore, you see him standing on the beach playing his flute. You move up to the beach, making yourself visible. He gasps.

You can't hold your excitement in. "A prince! This is so exciting! I'm a princess, you know! I have six sisters. I'm the youngest. We sing concerts for the commoners!! My dad is kind of mean but like, he's cool. He's a king. You know Poseidon? Yeah, that's my grandfather. I didn't mean to brag, sorry, haha. I'm just excited, it's like, a prince and a princess. Land and sea! Cool!!"

Eric starts to look overwhelmed. "Uh, yeah, haha," he says. "How old are you? You seem really young."

"Oh, that's....cool," you say, brushing your hair to the side like a total badass. "I'm actually a princess. A sea princess. My dad is a king. King Titan. I mean, Triton. Sorry, haha."

Both Eric and Grimsby look intrigued – impressed, even! The three of you continue your casual conversation on the beach. You have to make a move now if you want to stay in Eric's life!

Eric frowns. "...Oh...cool. Well, it seems like you're still pretty young. I mean, thanks for saving my life and everything, but..." He starts getting up. He doesn't finish his sentence. Eric is walking away. NO! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE! 

He waves goodbye again and then he's gone.

Without much thought, and assuming it a grand gesture, you say "Hey, you guys should TOTALLY visit my kingdom! Like, right now!" 

The men frown. "Have you been trying to trick us this whole time?" asks Grimsby. "What do you mean?" you ask.

"She's trying to drown us and drag us down to the ocean floor! Come, dear Eric! You'll not stray from land from now on!" says Grimsby, and he whisks a bewildered Eric away. Suddenly, you remember humans can't breathe underwater. You were so caught up in the moment, you completely forgot. DUH.

The two men are very impressed. "Why, you must come to mine right away!" says Eric. "Can you come right now?"

Uh-oh. Now you have to figure out the logistics of this. You don't have legs!

"Sure! Right now!" you echo. The three of you and Max ruminate in silence for a few seconds. Then, you get an idea.

You sadly own up to your lie. You tell them you actually rarely visit the surface, and you've never actually been on land. You assert that you weren't lying about being a princess, though.

You finally gain the courage to look up at Eric again. He's smiling. "Thanks for telling me the truth. I figured that was the case. And I don't care whether or not you're a princess. You saved my life! I love you! We will find a way to be together."

You enthusiastically blurt out your feelings of love. Eric looks unsure. "I mean, we just met. This is all a bit weird. I think I should go."

"It was you? You saved me?" he asks. "Yes," you say. "You were drowning." 

He starts to smile. He kneels beside you at the water's edge and you get to talking. He's enamored with you.

"Ah...yes. Yes! Of course," says Eric. He sits up, still clearly dizzy from his near-death experience. He kneels and then picks you up. You giggle as cutely as possible. Eric winces. He clearly needs medical treatment but is trying to be polite. About fifteen steps in, he stops and has to set you down. "Ugh, sorry. I can barely walk myself." He turns to Grimsby, who is basically a skeleton with a ponytail. Grimsby tugs at his collar as if to say "Uh...not me!" They apologize to you and head to Eric's castle, leaving you lying awkwardly on the beach.

"Oh, I didn't mention I have to be carried around. I can't walk, of course."

"Ah, yes..." Suddenly the stern king seems lost in thought, with a little smile creeping across his face. "I...I was your age when I snuck to the surface. I saw a beautiful human woman there. She was..." He trails off. Then he turns to you. "I'm sorry I discipline you so much. But not all humans are kind. If the wrong human saw you, they could harm you. I just want the best for you. But if you want to find this human boy, go find him." 

I seem to remember you telling us about a beautiful human you once knew...

You lead your apprehensive father to your grotto/human museum. He's appalled and furious. With several swishes of his mighty trident, he destroys every last treasure you've carefully accumulated over the last several years. You're heartbroken. You cry hopelessly.

It's late. Best to get a good night's sleep and go to the surface first thing tomorrow morning. 

But when you go looking, you can't find him anywhere. You search the whole day, and even look close to shore. Nothing. Sadly, you return home. On the way, you see a shipwreck. Wait...this is a new shipwreck. You've scavenged all the others in the area. You swim around it, excited at first to collect new human treasures. But then...

This ship looks awfully similar to the one you visited last night. You get a sick feeling in your stomach. You explore the top deck, which is broken apart. Then you look below decks. You almost faint. To your horror, you realize this WAS the ship from last night, and your beloved is inside. He went down with the wreckage.

Wait until morning
