    ACL Weekend 2, Day 1 With...CHERUB

We sat down with CHERUB to ask five, simple questions…

CHERUB has its roots at Middle Tennessee State University, where the electo-indie duo of Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber first met studying music promotion. Five years later, CHERUB was born. During our interview, Kelley holds the leash to his adorable dog, as Huber sports a Justin-Bieber t-shirt.

We sat down with them to ask five questions.

    1.

    1. What are your favorite person, places or things about Austin?

Kelley: I have two favorite spots in Austin that I like to go to. I like to go get drunk at Casino el Camino. And I like eating at Juan In a Million and getting their $5 special.

Huber: The hot sauce place on Sixth Street, too.

Kelley: I don't know, man. Downtown Austin. I just like Austin. Austin is poppin'.

    2.

    2. Who are the artists that you're looking to see and hear at ACL this weekend?

Huber: I saw the Foo Fighters last weekend and I'll do that again this weekend. I grew up listening to them and Dave Grohl is the reason that I started playing guitar…There are a lot of favorite songs, but the first time I ever saw them was at The Hangout a couple of years ago. My friend walked up and tapped me on the shoulder and was like," Are you okay, right now?" And I was like," Yeah, I'm good. I'm good." I had tears rolling during "My Hero". He's great. I love their shows. The way he connects with the crowd, the way the whole band is…they're fantastic.

Kelley: I would say Tame Impala. We missed them last night, but they are really good live. We saw them at Governor's Ball. They were awesome.

    3.

    3. What did you guys want to be when you were little?

Kelley: I wanted to be a musician since I was, like, six. I literally had no Plan B ever. And, really, I'm pretty shit at everything else, I would say. I'm not that great. I worked at Subway before I did this.

Huber: Same sort of deal—I wanted to be a musician forever. I remember back when I was building houses out of Legos, I told my Mom that I wanted to take all of the Legos and melt them together, so that people could have real houses made out of Legos. So, I guess maybe an architect…somewhere deep, deep, dark and away?

Kelley: I didn't even know this about him…No one in my family was a musician and no one in my family got that I could possibly make a living off of it. My Dad was supportive.

Huber: I remember your Dad telling me about getting you your first electric guitar.

Kelley: Yeah, my dad gave me my first electric guitar. So they weren't unsupportive. But they'd always be like, "When are you going to get a job, you know? A J-O-B."

Huber: My parents asked when I was going to finish my degree. Then, we played Red Rocks and they saw it on live stream. Then, they were like," Okay. Okay. I understand now." Both of our parents have been really supportive. Honestly, we wouldn't be here without them…They'd come out to festivals and shows to support us…Us calling up and saying," Hey, we can't get home." In the beginning, it was rough for a while.

    4.

    4. If you couldn't be a performer, what would you be doing right now?

Kelley: I would be a chef…I can be anything that I want to be, if I set my mind to it.

    5.

    5. Favorite curse word or substitution for a curse word?

Kelley: My favorite curse word is "penis breath"…or "cunt".

Huber: Somebody the other day, our good friend, was really offended when I called him a "dinklepoofen". And it's the most endearing term that we could possibly think of. Like," Oh, you're such a dinklepoofen." But he was like," How could you call me a dinklepoofen?" But, that's one of my favorite ones—"dinklepoofen".
