ABC just passed his undergrad and is looking for a job.He realizes that his GPA is just average and was not much involved in extra circulars in college.He did his share of studies and fun ,right from nursery till college .Currently you can see him struggling for a job as his Curriculum vitae (CV) is not "strong" enough.He blames the ever increasing competition for his struggle and hopes there is a job opening for him soon.
LMN is a current school student applying for college .She just got rejected by the top tech college of her country because of fair grades in a few subjects. She had been part of the school debate team ,spent 4 years to fluently play the violin,put in hours of hard work to be one of the top ranking students of her class.She never missed a class,never went to any outdoor activities(apart from volunteering which she did to build her a "strong" profile) nor did she partake in anything most of her friends had.Currently she is broken.Her life just got a lot more difficult.Without being able to get in a good college she has a miniscule chance of being placed at a reputed company.Her entire life plan seems to have failed.She blames herself for scoring less in the few subjects that she did,which now seems to have a control over her life.
XYZ is a cute little bundle of joy(as his elders would call him).He is 3 years old.But the look on his parents faces is probably the farthest from joy at the moment.They have a few preschool interviews lines up for the little guy but his parents are afraid he would not be able to crack them.His speech vocabulary is very limited ,he can only identify a few colors,animals or birds.He doesn't know how to paint,but certainly seems to like the smell and taste of it.What he fails to realise is that these are a few segments he will be tested in the interview of the best preschools in his city.
These are just few of the millions of examples out there of adults,students and kids who struggle to oversee when and how building a CV got control over their life. School and nursery become increasingly difficult because of the pressure from other schools.The media constantly examines the education of other nations, such as China. We hear stories about young children mastering complex mathematics or science; we see images of young students playing near master-level instruments. In turn, our society is also constantly reminded of how average our schools and students have become. We read about increased drop-out rates and poor graduation rates. We also see where schools are closing because they have lost government funding because of their "number". There is immense pressure for students to demonstrate above-average academics, prove themselves in some sort of artistic/creative/athletic area. Grades are no longer enough to get ahead; learning languages, volunteering, or somehow setting oneself apart from the rest is almost required to achieve today.Students are being tested more today than ever before. Students are driven by high GPAs and class rank, because without them, getting in to college is that much more difficult. Our parents and grandparents did not have near the pressure that our current high school students face. During their time, jobs were not a scarcity; money was easier to obtain, and college was an option. Today, jobs and money are few and far between, and college is a necessity.
There is more material to master, more technology to learn, and more credits/classes needed. It isn't necessarily harder (in fact some aspects are notably easier), it's just different, and there's definitely more stuff you are expected to learn and know.Great and even good colleges ,schools and nurseries set out with tough interview selection procedures,because supply-demand rule.You need them,they do not.They have hundreds waiting in line.
In this race to prove ourselves to be above average for jobs,schools and college interviews ,have we really proven ourselves to be better than the rest or have we spent our life to have it written down on a piece of paper that would prove our abilities to the interviewer?As time passes,competition in all fields gets increasingly difficult,to survive we need to stick our head out.The competition might get so preposterous that parents would plan to have a baby in december so that the baby would be born before round 1 applications start for preschool in september and hence would have better chances of making it in preschool 2 years later. Lets remember we all have our unique qualities we do excel in if given a chance,and these fields are not limited by the ones provided by academic institutions.Being trapped in the fear of a "strong" CV won't lead us anywhere fruitful when it comes to personal satisfaction even if it ends up providing us financial success .
