Diversity: What is it and why is it important?

    Diversity

Diversity is one of the most important parts of our society, coupled with equality it is what makes a society have variety while being equal. Diversity is healthy, everyone is made unique with their own niche in society. Diversity is a beautiful and wonderful thing. Diversity is what makes everyone have their own unique part in society. Society is like a well oiled machine. It needs every cog, part, and turner in order to work. Diversity comes in many shapes and forms; such as race, culture, creed, personality, and temperament. I will be explaining the different types of Diversity and why they are important. I will also be discussing strengths and weaknesses that make us diverse and what it means to be strong at something but weak in another. Can you tell a fish to fly and a bird to swim? No, everyone has things that they excel in and things they struggle in.

I'm gonna start out with most obvious forms of Diversity and that are physical characteristics such as race, ethnicity, gender, sex. I know you've heard a thousand times about how racism is wrong, which it is. I am about what makes us the same and what brings us together. That despite the color of someone's biological identity, that they are a person, capable of thinking and having emotions as well. Deep down all humans are the same despite these arbitrary differences.

The next form of Diversity on the list is culture. I'm so glad that the human race has many forms of cultures and subcultures. That different societies have different values and different views on things. We must tolerate others just as they tolerate us. What is tolerance? Tolerance is acceptable deviation from the norm. That despite culture or subculture, we should not discriminate against one another but accept this and tolerate others. If they aren't not harming you, why harm them?

Now, I'll be informing you on Diversity in the individual, accepting someone based on who they are. Everyone is different, everyone is unique and different in their own way. Everyone should be allowed to be who they are as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others. I'm known for my eccentricities, I'm commonly referred to as weird or different. I am who I am and there is no hiding it. As long as that person isn't hurting anyone by being who they are, they should be allowed to be their unique self, to be an individual.

Now I will be discuss the Diversity in the temperament what makes people strong and what makes them weak. Where some excel and where others struggle. There basic talents which humans are born with are physical, emotional, and mental temperaments. A man could be physically strong but if given constructive criticism could be torn down by it. Emotionally strong could be able to pass through a traumatic event unscathed. Mental strengths include intelligence and how much you can remember and how fast you can learn things. Everyone is different and these strengths and weaknesses can define a person, yet despite these differences, we are all equal.

Everyone has a place in this society and everyone is equal in this society. For Diversity to be truly good it must have equality coupled with it. Equality and Diversity, the fair balance of what makes a society great. What is equality? Why is it important? What does it mean? According to the dictionary, Equality is a noun that means "the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunity." Equality is a pragmatic view that has not been instilled completely within our society but what equality we have, I am grateful for.

We live in a Western Society whom one of its core tenets is "to be all that you can be." Individuality is encouraged and a basic right to everyone. Whatever your part of society is, it is important. In my past, I worked a job as a scale house operator at a large Postal Carrier air-hub at an airport for massive transport. I weighed massive plastic crates called ULDs so they knew where to place the ULDs on the plane. Every job in that air hub is an important part of the job is necessary for that air-hub to run. From the letter sorters to the pilots who fly the planes. Society has a place for everyone in it. No one is useless or unimportant.

Diversity comes in many forms. From external appearance being skin color to fashion sense. To internal being personality, eccentricities, values, ethics, creeds, and aspirations of the heart. Diversity is both internal and external. Diversity allows the individual to be fully expressed and examined. Diversity is key in the melting pot of the world. The land of the free and home of the brave, the United States of America. We all come from different backgrounds and are made of different things.

How boring would it be if everyone was the same? Would that be a world you would want to live in? Everyone has the same hobbies, the same interests, the same schedule, the same agenda, the same in everything. That would be a horrible world if everyone was just a cookie cutter clone in a society with no colour, no individuality, no Diversity.

All of humanity are not made equal but it is key that we all be treated as equals and work for equality. Just because someone has more money or wealth than you that does not mean they are above or greater than you. We are all equals and should be treated as such. Equality is the partner of Diversity.

Now I'm going to speak about the rival of Diversity and equality, that rival is named Adversity. What is adversity? Adversity is a noun which means "difficulties or misfortune." In my honest opinion I believe a person should be valued on how much wisdom and experience they have obtained from adversity. How they react to strife and anguish. How to be defeated but not yet destroyed, to come back from the brink of despair just to rise above it and overcome all life's obstacles, to be knocked down but refusing to quit, to live is to suffer, to survive is to create meaning from the suffering.

Diversity is most important part to being individual, without Diversity, individuality would not exist. What is individuality? Individuality is a noun the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind, especially when strongly differentiated. Individuality should be valued as the greatest value of our society. That you should be yourself always and not care what others think. Individuality is the core trait of liberty. In this article you have learned importance of Diversity along with equality, tolerance, adversity, and individuality. I hope I have informed you of these things and helped open up your mind to these traits and their importance in Society.
