You've followed the recipe to Oscar success! Starting with a solid base of serious drama, you've seasoned it with a perfect cast, deep fried it in some good ol' fashioned Hollywood values and removed it from the oven just in time. Or else you've spent the best part of the year wining and dining the judges. Either way, congratulations, a thoroughly deserved success!

The Academy Award For Best Picture

Aspects of your film touch on greatness, a star turn or a well-judged exploration of a topical issue perhaps, but the overall presentation of the final product just doesn't tick enough boxes to warrant the Best Picture prize. And that's all anyone cares about, so throw those no-mark Best Director statuettes in the bin.

A Few Notable Gongs, But Misses Out On 'The Big One'

While there might be a broad consensus that your film 'deserved' to win the Best Picture, it just wasn't ideologically aligned enough with the Academy's tastes to scoop the main prize. Out of guilt, they arbitrarily award a gong to one of your minor cast members whose speech is heavily cut during broadcast.

A 'Best Supporting...' Conciliation

The only reason your cast and crew have received an invite is that those guys doing the sound mixing did a really great job on your otherwise forgettable failure of a film. Still, there's no reason why you can't ride their coattails and rub a few shoulders while you're there.

A Minor Award In A Category Omitted From The Live Broadcast

The Academy hate you and everything you stand for. Start practicing your gracious loser face now, because you're in for a whole night of forced grinning and clapping other people.

Snubbed

We get it, you're an artist who sees little value in the 'Hollywood system,' but the approval of the coffeehouse intelligentsia isn't going to pay the rent. Your film makes a catastrophic loss at the box office and eventually even your own family dismiss you and your work as that of a pretentious fraud. Sorry.

The Palme D'Or

What were you thinking? Your movie might have made a killing at the box office, but all those guys at the studio care about is artistic integrity. Clear your desk at once.
