1. Gorman Falls, Colorado Bend State Park
Waterfalls in Texas? That's right. This breath taking view can be found at Gorman Falls, in the Colorado Bend State Park, and it's only a three hour drive from San Antonio! Take a short hike through exotic landscape and lose yourself in the peace and serenity this hidden gem offers. Fight your need to take a selfie, leave all devices behind, and completely disconnect.
2. Kayaking in the Medina River
Hiking boots don't float your boat, how about a kayak? Just 45 minutes northwest of San Antonio (or one episode of Game of Thrones), the Medina river in Bandera, Tx continues to be one of our state's best kept secrets. The town has no shortage of canoe, kayak, and river tube rentals to get you ready for a splashy adventure.
3. Mainstreet in Fredericksburg, Tx
So not everyone is an adventure seeking, sun loving, hiker and that's perfectly fine. There's still places to see, enjoy, and have fun in for those of us who rather stay in the shade. Just an hour north of San Antonio, via I-10 W and US-87 N, is the small town of Fredericksburg. The heart of the town, otherwise known as the "Magic Mile", is a great place to shop, dine, and enjoy a glass of red wine from the local vineyard. Plus, the gardens and courtyards are great for kids to have good 'ol fashion fun.
4. Historic District of Gruene
If you read number three and didn't make it past the "wine" part then I have a great suggestion for you. The Historic District of Gruene in New Braunfels, Tx is well know for its famous Gruene Hall, Gristmill River Restaurant, and antique shops. But for the wine connoisseurs, The Grapevine is a must visit. They offer a wide selection of new world and Texan wines. They also have an outdoor garden, with live music on Saturdays and a "Come & Taste It" event is held every third Thursday of each month except January. And if wine isn't your thing, they also have a large array of Texan craft beers. So stay thirsty my friends.
5. Enjoy a sunset at Enchanted Rock
Once you get past the adventurous hike and gorgeous view, experience the magic that inspired the Tonkawa, Apache and Comanche tribes to call it the "Crying Rock". Many believed it would grant invisibility, that it was a portal to other worlds, and even some believed it to be the lost El Dorado gold. If nothing else, it's a great place to take a selfie.
