When I put on red lipstick, I feel as confident as Sandy looks at the end of Grease in her tight leather pants and sky-high hair. Except I'm not wearing it in a Fun House because that is just weird/terrifying. But I digress.
Unfortunately, the rough part about lip color is the whole....color part. Color theory is a real life thing, as everyone has learned by the brilliance of color correcting makeup. And the sad truth is that certain colors just do not work on translucent skin. Or olive, pink, yellow, tan, brown, black skin for all my other ladies out there. So trying to find the perfect red lip--like PERFECT--can be an arduous (and kind of yucky) process.
Like, as much as I love Sephora and the ability to give myself an entire manicure without anyone so much as looking at me like that's unusual, I don't really feel like applying a highly pigmented, creamy substance that has been collecting dust and, you know, been on who knows how many other people's pie holes!
Enter Bite Beauty Lip Lab and get ready to feel like a KWEEEEN YAAAASSS WEERKKK.
Bite is the lipstick brand sold exclusively at Sephora that boasts its lip products are so natural you can EAT them, minus the granola-y and sometimes self-important marketing surrounding most organic lines. The Toronto-based company opened a store-front version of their mad scientist operation where you can create YOUR OWN COLOR!
The concept is pretty basic (and awesome).
1. Book an appointment at Bite's only Lip Lab located on Prince Street in SoHo for yourself (and your girl squad).
3. Stomach the fact that this tube of liplip is going to cost you $45.
2. Sit down with a Lip Lab Artist and go to fucking town.
(For reals, the Artist will mix you anything you want with zero judgements (maybe). Ever wanted to try lipstick the color of a blue raspberry Jolly Rancher? Get it.)
I got to go with some of my best friends in the whole world while visiting them in NYC, and we had a blast.
Most of my friends really went for it and played around with some wild colors. But me? I was on a mission. A mission that has been unresolved by a single tube of lippy for years. Until now...
The Perfect Red Lip
I am about as pale as they come, but I have very strong pink undertones in my complexion. Most red lipsticks on the market tend to be more of an orange red, which on me looks cheap and trampy. To work with my coloring, I need more blue tones to counteract the vibrancy of red against my already reddish skin.
Once my color was perfect, we went from the art class portion of the process to the chemistry part.
Seriously. Theres a centrifuge involved. And like a giant blast chiller that I think has liquid nitrogen in it or something rad.
