Packing Tips For JNF AltBreak

Travelling to a different country to volunteer for a whole week is super exciting! packing? Not so much.

We'll say it - packing stinks

Travelling to Israel is a big deal -- especially when you are going to volunteer. It can feel a bit overwhelming, but we are here to help! Here are some tips about things to pack so that your time is spent having fun, not worrying about whats missing from your suitcase

1. Don't forget your passport!

You won't make it past TSA without your passport. It can take up to three months to get a new passport so make sure it is not expired!

2. Prepare for the plane

The flight to Israel is pretty long, so you want to make sure to pack things you may need. Keep your toiletries, money, passport, and an extra change of clothes in your carry on. Plus whatever else you'll need to survive ten hours stuck in an airplane.

3. Toiletries to last a week

Stock up on travel sized body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and whatever else you think you may need. You're not going to want to lug around huge containers all week!

Don't forget to pack some plastic bags, you wouldn't want stuff to leak all over your bag!

4. Bring a week's worth of clothes to get dirty in

Make sure to bring stuff you wouldn't mind getting mud or paint on. Even if you don't roll around in the dirt, you will end up a bit messy.

5. Be prepared for the weather!

Bring lots of layers. You may be volunteering in a desert state but those places can get pretty cold. Did you know it snows sometimes in Israel? Yeah, neither did we...

6. Nice clothes for Shabbat

After working hard , Shabbat is a perfect reason to clean yourself up and look good.

You gotta look fab for the Sab'.

7. Don't forget your work gloves!

While you are having an awesome time volunteering (which often leads to spontaneous dance parties), your work gloves will protect your hands from all the cracks, splinters, and not-so-fun stuff.

8. Don't forget about sun protection!

The sun will beat down on you all day long. So protect yourself against it with hats and sunscreen. Thin shirts with long sleeves also help to protect from sunburn!

So don't forget to reapply your sunscreen!

(This is not how to apply it just in case you're wondering).

9. And bring your water bottle!

You need to stay hydrated, especially while working all day. Just make sure you know how to use your water bottle.

10. Bring a Camera!

There's going to be a lot of selfie opportunities. Maybe you'll even make a new friend...... or not.

11. A travel adapter for Israel outlets

No one wants to see their battery die because they took too many selfies. Make sure that to pack an European converter too, or you won't be able to charge up.

12. Spending money

There will be opportunities to spend money on delicious food or on gifts to bring back home. Make sure you bring enough money to spend. (Plus money for tips!)

Just remember that you have to change your money into Israeli shekels (1 US Dollar = about 3.8 Shekels)

13. A great attitude!

It's going to be hard work, and a long trip. But celebrate! You have a chance to do amazing work, meet super-cool people, and be in Israel! What more could you ask for?
