12 Christmas Comedy Music Videos That Are Actually Funny

Many horribly unfunny "comedy" Christmas songs snag way too much airtime each December (I'm looking at you, Elmo & Patsy). Here are twelve music videos that should give you a genuine yuletide smile or two.

    1. Robert Earl Keen, "Merry Christmas From the Family"

The original Redneck Christmas Carol is delightfully funny, wickedly clever, and ultimately warm and sweet. It's a little odd to watch Robert Earl Keen lip-sync to a live recording, but the crowd's enthusiasm is infectious, and the "family" is spot-on.

    2. Garfunkel and Oates, "Present Face"

You know that face you made when you unwrapped Aunt Ida's present and first gazed upon the orange and green cap she knitted for you? Well, everyone's favorite female comedy-folk duo wrote an adorable song about that face, then recruited some funny friends for this charmingly lo-fi video.

No, that's not the same face I made when you gave me that velcro Limp Bizkit wallet. I totally love that wallet. I don't use it because...because it's just too nice.

    3. Hot Breakfast, "An Idiot For Christmas"

Hot Breakfast! understands you. Sure, last year you waited until the last minute, but this year you're totally starting your Christmas shopping in the summer. Well...okay, summer didn't work out, but definitely in the fall. Yep. Not waiting until December 24th again. Nope.

    4. Jonathan Coulton & John Roderick, "2600"

Jonathan Coulton and John Roderick wrote a song about the BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT EVER, and Craig J. Clark made a wonderful little fan video that's sure to delight those of us with permanent thumb damage thanks to that stupid joystick.

    5. Dave and Brian, "Deck the Halls" (Wrecking Ball Parody)

Philadelphia-based comedy duo Dave & Brian offer up the best "Wrecking Ball" parody to date. You'll never look at Santa the same way again. Or onesie pajamas, for that matter.

    6. Paul Simon, Steve Martin, and Billy Joel, "Silver Bells"

The video is just a bunch of stills of a 1978 (or so) recording, but that's not the point - the point is Steve Martin's wonderfully inappropriate three-minute monologue "What Christmas Means to Me" that begins around 1:12. And also, holy crap, Paul Simon and Billy Joel and Steve Martin.

And yes, that's really Billy Joel on piano and harmony.

    7. Sarah Silverman, "Give the Jew Girl Toys"

Sarah Silverman's bouncy plea to Santa to give toys to the Jewish people (or, let's face it, just her) is about as irreverent as holiday music gets, and she ups the ante in her hilariously dark and creepy video. Not safe for work...but whaddya expect? It's Sarah Silverman, for crying out loud.

    8. Cartman, "O Holy Night"

Sure, there are dozens of holiday-related South Park clips that could be on this list. But Kyle's joy at getting to zap Cartman is just too infectious to pass up.

    9. Reuben, "Christmas is Awesome"

Okay, this tune from the now-defunct Reuben isn't for everyone - after all, it's impossible to satirize unpleasant screamcore without screaming unpleasantly. But the video is surprisingly warm and silly, and for some reason the line "And if I eat a sprout / You gotta eat a sprout / You gotta suffer too" cracks me up.

    10. Billy Idol, "Jingle Bell Rock"

I really wanted to limit this list to videos that are intentionally funny, but I couldn't resist including this enormous slab of cheese. Everything about this video is just so wrong, from Billy's Botoxed face to his awkward smiles to panicked look in his eyes. You can't help but wonder what horrible secret the director must be holding over Billy's head to make him appear in this mess.

Also, man oh man, what a horrible version of "Jingle Bell Rock." Remember when this guy was punk?

    11. "Weird Al" Yankovic, "Christmas at Ground Zero"

Some people swear by the alarmingly twisted "The Night Santa Went Crazy," but I like this one better, if only because Weird Al captured the Phil Spector Christmas sound so lovingly. True, the term "ground zero" has a whole new significance now (the song was released in 1986), but if you get past that, it's quite funny. The video is mostly found footage and movie clips, but it's assembled brilliantly, especially at 1:39 (again, though...1986).

    12. CBS Christmas Message (1966)

Less funny than enchanting, this minute-long cartoon was designed by illustrator R. O. Blechman as a little holiday commercial for CBS. Simple and charming, it's sure to leave you with a smile on your face, even if it's hard to imagine a network using "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" in a promo today.
