Rick Santorum declared victory tonight in Minnesota and Missouri caucuses, saying the voices of voters in those states were heard "especially loud" at Romney headquarters in Massachusetts. But Santorum's performance is not a win — it's just a loss for Mitt Romney.

Fresh off landslide victories in Florida and Nevada, the momentum didn't carry through for Romney in the two non-binding contests. While he didn't lose out on any delegates (and Santorum didn't gain any), Romney's lackluster performance once again proves he has trouble with the base — and Santorum's candidacy is just the manifestation of that trouble.

The people who turn out for these low-profile, non-binding affairs are the same activists who knock on doors and drive Republicans to the polls in November. And while Santorum isn't going to be the Republican nominee, he can go a long way toward souring that Republican base toward its likely nominee.

"I care about the very rich and the very poor. I care about 100% of America," Santorum said, eyeing Romney.

Romney won both Minnesota and Colorado in 2008, and narrowly lost Missouri to John McCain. Tonight he lost all three — and by wide margins at that. (Santorum had twice the number of votes as Romney in conservative Missouri.)

Losing is never good, getting crushed this bad — even when the stakes are so low — are a sign of fundamental weakness.

The question being asked now by Romney supporters and GOP officials is why can't Romney seal the deal. His campaign will have a long February if they can't come up to an answer to that question — and fast.

  • Doesn't this show that while Romney is weak with base Republicans he does very well with moderates and centrists? As long as he can score the nomination the base Republicans don't matter that much, do they? In the general election they're just going to be voting against Obama. Moderate conservatives and the “undecideds,” however, seem much more likely to vote for Romney in the general election which would pose a bigger challenge to Obama than a more conservative candidate.

  • Would someone please reassure me that Santorum cannot be a viable VP candidate?

  • Romney can't seal the deal, because no matter how much he wants to be seen as a citizen businessman turned politician, all he has ever been, all he will ever be is a politician. Everything he says and does is superficial, phony, or an out and out lie. The more he talks, and the more people look at him, the more people can see right through him.

  • Excellent and insightful interpretation of today's results, and the election so far. The voters knew that the polls were non-binding, so they decided to send a message: We aren't enthused with Romney. The fundamental problem is that Romney is a poseur, but not in the way Gingrich is. Newt knows good and well that he's a double-dealing snake, looking to aggrandize himself anyway he can. For Romney, though, that fake-seeming persona is how he really is. He probably doesn't even know that he's doing it, or what everyone is concerned about. “Pretend you're great and you'll be great” seems to have been his personal motto. And that idea (along with millions and millions of dollars) is just what you need to lose an election.  The American people aren't buying it. So despite the desperation of the GOP, Romney will still be the nominee, because he perfectly mirrors the empty “values” (read: “greed”) of today's GOP. Republican voters will be disheartened and fail to turn out. And Obama will coast to re-election (no matter how “close” the media claims the race is).
