Obama: Ryan Budget Would Make Weather Forecasts Less Accurate
It’s a bit of a stretch.
“Over time, our weather forecasts would become less accurate because we would not be able to afford to launch new satellites. That means governors and mayors would have to wait longer to order evacuations in the event of a hurricane.”

marlynd a year agoIt’s a realistic future. Our current satellites are aging and need replacing. Space debris and the latest solar maximum are adding additional stress on our current GOES satellites. Weather forecasting can be improved with faster and higher resolution satellites. Tropical weather - hurricanes/typhoons are dependent on satellite images as data is sparse over the oceans. As a weather forecaster I do worry about our lost of satellites and aging equipment.

Jim Jones a year agoThe consequences of the Ryan budget are a balanced budget where we don’t spend anymore that what we take in, a concept that’s foreign to liberals. The liberal fix is of course tax people more so you can feed the entitlement machine. And if Obama was so concerned about cutting funding that would effect technology then why has he put the hammer down on Nasa?

Denis R. a year agoObama is 100% correct. Currently, weather forecasting is actually quite good, regardless of all the jokes (which goes to show that people don’t really pay attention). The cuts would hit right at the heart of the huge scientific infrastructure necessary to get this accuracy. And for people who live on the coasts where they are vulnerable to hurricanes, this is a friggin’ big deal. A loss of accuracy in hurricane forecasting can mean the difference between life and death for thousands. Preparation is the only defense we have.

WhatTheHolyHeck a year agoWhy is it a stretch? Our GPS satellite infrastructure is crumbling, and there’s been a lot of informed talk about how consumer GPS services are going to either suffer or get throttled when the satellites start to go. Why should the weather satellites be any different? Sure, it’s an extreme example, but I don’t see that it’s inaccurate. Being the Prez means looking at the implications of big decisions.
