MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina—Fox News personality Juan Williams offered Newt Gingrich the opportunity to play the victim card tonight, pressing Gingrich on his call for young people from lower income families to work as janitors in their schools.

The question drew boos from the audience, and Gingrich’s spirited defense -- addressed icily to "Juan" -- received over 30 seconds of raucous applause. It was Gingrich at his best, knowledgeable and unflappable.

And as POLITICO’s Jonathan Martin points out, the question may have done the most to end Rick Santorum's surge of momentum tonight.
