1. Aldo Leopold

The American author, scientist, ecologist, forester and environmentalist, best known for his book A Sand County Almanac, and his influential work in the development of modern environmental ethics.

2. Edward Abbey

His best-known works include the novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, which has been cited as an inspiration by radical environmental groups, and the non-fiction work Desert Solitaire.

3. John Muir

A Scottish-American naturalist, author, and early advocate of wilderness preservation, infamous for his nature writings in the Sierra Nevada and petitioning the U.S. Congress for the establishment of both Yosemite and Sequoia National Park.

"John Muir was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, have been read by millions. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he founded, is now one of the most important conservation organizations in the United States. One of the best-known hiking trails in the U.S., the 211-mile (340 km) John Muir Trail, was named in his honor. Today, he is referred to as the "Father of the National Parks."

4. Rachel Carson

An American Marine Biologist and conservationist whose book, Silent Spring, is credited with advancing the global environmental movement.

"Late in the 1950s, Carson turned her attention to conservation, especially environmental problems that she believed were caused by synthetic pesticides. The result was Silent Spring (1962), which brought environmental concerns to an unprecedented share of the American people. Although Silent Spring was met with fierce opposition by chemical companies, it spurred a reversal in national pesticide policy, which led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides, and it inspired a grassroots environmental movement that led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Carson was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Jimmy Carter."

5. Enos Mills

An American naturalist and homesteader, known as the main figure behind the establishment of Rocky Mountain National Park.

"Throughout his time in various assignments, Mills was also leading the fight to preserve the area around Longs Peak as a national park. Aided by groups such as the Sierra Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mills succeeded and Congress established Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915. Called the "Father of Rocky Mountain National Park," Mills continued to lecture and write books until his death at age 52 in 1922. Mills Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park is named in his honor."
